October Design Principle: The Having of Wonderful Ideas
"It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams."
~Gabriel García Márquez
Hello Glennwood Families,
Happy Fall and welcome back from fall break! I hope you all had a wonderful week with your families. We have had an awesome week of learning, exploring and SOARing. Our week started with the CSD Reads on Monday with a virtual author visit with Georgia native and former professional football player, now children's author, Malcolm Mitchell.
Most of our fall EL Education Expeditions are kicking off this week. Kindergarten began theirs on Wednesday with the expert "Animal Man," and had an opportunity to meet and learn about some very unique animals. I was very brave and even held a beautiful king snake named Oreo. A big thank you to our PTA for sponsoring this expert visit.
October is a full of many opportunities for families to be involved at Glennwood. We have Booktoberfest, PTA Romp and Read, PTA Sprit Nights, PTA Fall Carnival, Fall Book Fair with Little Shop of Stories and our much loved Book Character Parade on October 24. Please check the newsletter carefully for more details for each event.
Warm regards,
Holly Brookins, Ph.D
Principal

Boys In Action 2024-25
Boys in Action (grades K-2) will provide an opportunity for male students from across the African Diaspora to connect, be inspired, find support, and be guided by male mentor volunteers from our school system and community who also racially identify as African Diasporic (communities descended from people from Africa). Sessions will focus on team-building games, nurturing leadership skills, affirming identity, goal setting, and just the joy of being together. Glennwood staff member, Mr. Jonathan Holloman, will lead the group. We would also like to invite parent volunteers to volunteer their time to support our Boys in Action during any or all of the sessions below. If you are interested, please email Jonathan Holloman at jholloman@csdecatur.net for more details.
*Please note that all parent volunteers will require a background check through the CSD process.
Boys in Action will be held Two Thursdays a month after school from 2:50 pm-3:50 pm at Glennwood. Parents and caregivers must arrange for transportation for their child. If they are in Animal Crackers, please ensure they are aware that your child will come late.

Lighten the Load for CSD Families
As fall break approaches, we're reminded of how DEF's Lighten the Load program began -- with an elementary school teacher who told us that one of her students dreaded school breaks because he and his siblings counted on having two meals a day at school. Our Lighten the Load program has evolved since then, but we're still committed to helping remove obstacles - like food insecurity - for our kids.
The number of weekend food bags we provide has DOUBLED this year, and we need your help to ensure we're able to continue to meet this need. This is our community, and these are OUR kids. Please consider donating to DEF, or purchasing items from our Lighten the Load wish list today.
DEF Provides Suicide Intervention Training for Anyone Interested!
You probably know that September is Suicide Prevention Month -- but do you know that through Joe’s Fund, DEF’s behavioral health fund, we provide ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshops multiple times each year? These two-day workshops are open to ANY CSD staff member or Decatur community member. We held a refresher course just this week, and the next trainings will be: October 10-11, February 27-28, and March 13-14. Help us make Decatur a suicide-safe community - sign up using the QR code. Interested in supporting this important work? Donate here: https://decatureducationfoundation.org/donate/.
