Notes from the Principal
A Time of THANKS!
November is a time of giving THANKS for the many blessings we have been given. Our Longfellow staff THANKS all of our families for sharing your Lions with us each day! This time of year really makes you aware of the many treasures we have in life and to celebrate them each day. We give THANKS for:
T – THANKFUL for our Longfellow Lions
H – HAPPY to have our Lions in school each day
A – APPRECIATE the strong parental support
N – NURTURING staff to guide and educate our students
K – KINDNESS throughout our school
S – SUPPORTIVE community and school board
Happy THANKSgiving from all of the Longfellow students and staff!
Mrs. Heckenlaible
Thank you parents/guardians!!!
Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, October 19th. We had a 98% turnout rate - YAY!!! if you were not able to attend or catch up with your child's teacher, please contact your child's teacher to arrange a new conference time. It takes a true parnership, between home and school, to provide the best possible education for our children.
Longfellow ROCKS!!!!
Who Rocked the Test Scores?
Woot-Woot = Longfellow Elementary learners did!
Our Longfellow Lions and staff did a phenomenal job with the SD SBA (South Dakota Smarter Balance Assessment) during the spring of 2023. We outscored the state average by 3% in ELA and by 19% in math. Our Lions persisted and continued to strive for accuracy and their scores definitely show it. We are so proud of our school!!!
You CAN do it all
5th grade band members spent time with the MHS band
MHS girls soccer team let us cheer them on before their state tournament
Cross Country runners ran over before heading to state
Big Friend, Little Friend volunteers are in our building daily
It's important to remind our lions that life can involve academics, sports, the arts and community service. The high school and college students who come into our building are great examples of that!
Before School Supervision
As it stays dark and cold in the mornings, we want to make you aware that the doors do not open and supervision doesn't start until 7:30 AM. Thank you for your attention on this matter!

There are a lot of things happening in Mitchell! One way to keep up with that is to look at the monthly events calendar for Mitchell Main Street and Beyond.
Safety First
Please remember to go to the corner and cross the street with the crossing guards. Please do NOT encourage your child to cross in the middle of the street. We want to keep ALL of our students safe and set a good example.

Parent Portal Facts
- "I know I asked the doctor's office to send a note for that appointment, but did they remember to do so?"
- "I sent the doctor note with my child. Did she remember to deliver it to the office?"
They best way to check on that is to log on to your parent portal. You may not see daily grades but you will be able to see their quarter grades and, of course, attendance. The parent portal will become extrememly important as your child moves on to Middle School and High School as you can check on missing assignements and current grades. Also, the parent portal is where you update your info at the end of each year, which registers your child for the upcoming school year. PLEASE, famlilarize yourself with the portal. If you do not remember your log on info, please ask the office.
