Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
There is much to celebrate again at CHS. Our outstanding Wind Ensemble took 3rd at the state tournament with Canby’s highest score ever. Our OHSET team took home the championship in Freestyle 5+ Drill. Congratulations to Madison Wheeler, Madi Bigej, Sadie Schweitzer, Hailey Magenheimer, Hayley Smith, and Addie Heinemann.
Our track and field team had a successful district meet with a large number of athletes qualifying for state, and Madison Bigej and Cohen Hall took home the district title. Baseball is currently 1st and looking to host a playoff game Tuesday. Softball will likely travel for the first round next Tuesday. Please see below for more information about all of our talented musicians and athletes below.
We celebrated the graduation march today where our seniors traveled to their elementary and middle schools in their regalia. Also today, we welcomed our incoming 9th graders for tours and a club fair. We are excited to honor the class of 2024 as they move on to their next steps and help the class of 2028 transition into being a part of the Cougar family.
Next week, we will have a secure drill May 21st during 1st period. During these drills we lock exterior doors to prepare for a threat outside of the building. Classes happen as normal as we check to make sure our systems are functioning properly.
Finally, as we march toward the end of the school year, it is very important that all students finish strong. It is important that students are Ready to Learn, on time, prepared, and with phones away, every day.
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Senior One Acts
This Friday evening at 7pm, our Thespian Troupe is presenting a wonderful student-directed production called A Night Under the Stars, by Tracy Wells. The show is FREE and ONE NIGHT ONLY!
Directors are seniors Tyson Driver, Aaron Francom, Luke Viter, Carter Ward, and Joel Winnigham.
They've each taken on directing the different vignette scenes that make up the play, which explores a variety of circumstances that bring people out into the wilderness for a night under the stars. Scenes range from a high-stakes marshmallow roasting contest, to the difficulties of setting up a tent, to a heart-to-heart between a father and son about their changing family. It's a lovely ~90 minute show and suitable for all ages!
Graduation All Night Party
Please help us celebrate the Canby High School Class of 2024 by signing up to volunteer at the Senior "GAP" All NIght Party on Friday, June 7th. We need as many volunteers as possible to make this an amazing event for our graduates. Senior parents are more than welcome to sign up to help, but we also need parents who do not have seniors. Think of volunteering at this event as paying it forward. Volunteering gives the senior parents a chance to attend graduation, and visit with family and friends who might be visiting for graduation. Then when it's you students turn to graduate, other parents will do the same for you.
When signing up, please make sure that you add an email and a phone number. I will be sending out reminders as we get closer to the event. The location will not be disclosed until a couple of hours before the event, because we want to surprise the student, but know that it is within a half an hour drive.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Amber Bedortha at canbyamber@yahoo.com.

They earned 3rd in state and received the highest scores on stage in Canby's history. Canby will also be competing in the Jazz Band State Championships this Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College at 10:15am. Congrats to the Cougar Band!
Baseball
The Canby Cougars added to their 15-game win streak with an 11-1 win over the Milwaukie Mutangs. The Cougars are 24-3 overall this season. Brady Ackerman's 1.104 OPS leads the Cougars. The infielder has a 0.563 OBP and a 0.541 slugging percentage this season. Joe Scott leads the Cougars in pitching with 49 innings pitched. The starting pitcher has a 1.43 ERA this season. Blake Miller has a team leading 168 total fielding chances this season. Miller's primary position is catcher. With one game left to play, the Cougar baseball team is currently ranked 1st in the OSAA Rankings. The team will likely host a first round playoff game on Tuesday May 21st.
Softball
CHS softball is finishing off the regular season this week with a game against Hood River on Wednesday and our last home game against Putnam on Friday. The Cougars are in good shape to make the playoffs this year. We are predicted to finish 3rd or 4th in league and 11th or 12th in the state. The Cougars have no seniors this season, but have some terrific young talent for the next few years to come. Some standouts this year include freshman Taylor Saucedo and Sophomores Summer St. John, Abigail Troutman, and Allison Hayzlett, all with batting averages above .300 for the season. We are looking forward to playoffs and showing off what this young team has to offer!
Girls Golf
The Girl's Golf season has come to an end with three players competing at the State Golf Tournament at Trysting Tree in Corvallis. Gracie Carter ended up 32nd with a score of 209, Grace English ended up 38th with a score of 209 and Jazmin Diaz was 50th with a score of 226. A very successful golf season for the girls.
Boys Golf
Last week the Boy's Golf team participated in the Regional tournament. The Regional tournament was played at Aspen Lakes in Sisters, OR. In 20 mph winds and gusts up to 40, the Cougars battled Mountain View on the course and Ridgeview HS who finished earlier in the day for a single team spot at State. The Cougars were led by Freshman Mason DeBruyn’s 4th place 80, shooting a team score of 355 to miss out on State by only 11 strokes, finishing a solid 4th place. This week was the OSAA 5A State tournament played Monday and Tuesday at Quail Valley in Banks. Mason DeBruyn was the only Canby player to qualify for State. Mason was the first Canby Freshman since 2016 to qualify as an individual for State. Quail Valley was a difficult test to navigate between hard fast greens, thick rough, and wind. Mason finished a respectable T31 (86 & 86) in 5A and a solid 6th place for all freshmen.
OHSET
The state OHSET meet was this past weekend and there were 8 athletes representing CHS. The Freestyle 5+ Drill team (Madi Bigej, Hailey Magenheimer, Hayley Smith, Sadie Schweitzer, Madison Wheeler, Addie Heinemann) took home 1st place! What a huge accomplishment. The drill team is heading to PNWIC (regional competition with teams from Washington) in June. In addition, the CHS OHSET team had the following also qualify for PNWIC: Sadie Schweitzer took 2nd place in Dressage, Madison Wheeler took 5th place at In Hand Trail, Lola Rice took 3rd place in Steer Daubing, Madi Bigej, Sadie Schweitzer, Madison Wheeler, Hailey Magenheimer took 4th place at In Hand Obstacle Relay. Congratulations to all the Cougar OHSET athletes.
Boys Tennis
Last week, the Cougar Boys Tennis team beat Franklin at home to finish the regular season with a 13-4 record. On Saturday, May 11th Canby hosted the JV Districts where each team in the league was asked to bring 4 of their best JV teams to this JV district tournament. Canby’s #1 and #2 JV teams met in the finals. Senior Atlai Rodriguez and Sophomore Carter Reed edged out Junior twin brothers Hunter and Hayden Jeffrey 8-4 to take the title. It was a smashing success and we look forward to hosting it again next year. Our Varsity Tournament started Tuesday May 14th at Parkrose where we had Seniors Hemsi-Walters and Evan Kinzie both advanced to the quarter finals where they will be playing for an opportunity to qualify for the State tournament.
Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team competed in the league tournament on Wednesday, May 15. Singles player Geneva Diggles and doubles team Isabell Arredondo/Rayanne Schedler made it to the championship quarter finals, where they lost in hard fought battles. Doubles teams Malaysia Griffen/Anna Poe and Evlallya Burkoff/Aubri Wohlers made it to the consolation quarter finals, where they lost their last matches. Caitlyn Lay is going to the semi finals of consolation, she is still in the tournament. First year coaches, Josie Warren and Arika Evans are very proud of the work the girls have put in this season.
