Talking to Children about COVID-19: A quick reference guide for parents
As we begin the new school year, concerns over the coronavirus and its variants have caused a new level of anxiety for both children and adults. Many of us were hoping to start this school year not having to be as worried about COVID-19, but that is not our reality. As a parent it is important that you take time out to answer your children’s questions and help them cope with any anxiety. Here are a few tips to help you speak with your child about COVID-19:
Remain Calm and Reassuring
- · Children will react and follow your verbal and nonverbal information
- · Talk to your children about factual information about the virus and guidance on what they can do to prevent infection. This may give a greater sense of control and help reduce anxiety
- · Remind them that you and the adults at their school are there to keep them safe and healthy
- · Children may need extra attention from you and may want to talk about their fears, concerns, and questions
Be honest and accurate
- · Be aware of the comments that are made by others around your children. You may need to discuss these comments if they are different from the values you have in your home.
- · Know the symptoms of COVID-19. Explain the importance of staying home when sick.
- · Discuss the school rules and practices that are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
- · Review and model basic hygiene and healthy practices for protection (ex: washing hands for 20 seconds)
You know your child best; let their questions be your guide. It is important to share the facts without promoting a high level of stress and anxiety. Remind them that the adults in their lives are working hard to create a safe and healthy environment.
