Dear Musson Community,
Happy Spring Break! I hope you all have a wonderful week off, filled with relaxation, recharging, and quality time with family and friends.
As we reflect on the month of March, I want to extend a huge thank you to:
- Ms. Silvestri for organizing an incredible March is Reading Month!
- Thank you to everyone who supported the Book Swap, and a special thank you to the PTA and Student Council for their help in making it a success!
- Mr. Szawiela and the entire 3rd grade for a remarkable concert! It was a beautiful display of growth, pride, and love for music!
- The PTA for their support and grant funding, which brought us the 3rd grade guest speaker, "And This is How It Was," tied to Michigan History.
- The PTA for organizing Authors in April, as well as Books and Bagels.
Also, a HUGE congratulations to our two 4th grade Boys REBL Basketball teams, who made it to the City Championship game last Friday. It was an amazing game, and display of sportsmanship. We are so proud of both teams and thank you to coaches and families. Congrats to the City Champs, the White Team! And, Congrats to City Champ Runner Ups, the Blue Team!
Enjoy your Spring Break, and we’ll see you all on March 31st!
With care,
Laura Matthews

Spring Assessments
As we approach spring online testing, we want to ensure that all students have the best possible experience. Here are some friendly and important reminders!
- Please try to avoid scheduling morning appointments during the testing window, as the majority of tests will take place during our morning hours.
- A healthy breakfast and a good night’s sleep will set students up for success.
- To avoid distractions, please leave smartwatches and phones at home; if brought to school, they will need to be stored in the teacher's or main office.
- Students should bring their personal headphones if possible, as all directions will be read aloud online. If your child does not have personal headphones, we will have them borrow from our media center.
- Reach out to your child's teacher to ask any questions or double check scheduling.
Third and fourth grade will take ELA and Math.
Fifth grade will take ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

News and Notes
As we move fully in to the 2nd half of the school year, I like to add this section for 5th grade families to be aware of needed information regarding exciting end of the year activities and transition to middle school information. Please see the first update below.
Transition to Van Hoosen:
Welcome Information
Here is a link to our 5th Grade Welcome information page: https://vanhoosen.rochester.k12.mi.us/parents/5th-grade-orientation
The page contains more information about Van Hoosen; classes, teachers, VH mentors and how they will help with the transition to middle school, PTSA, and more! Please make sure that you check out this helpful information.
Visit Van Hoosen
In early May, students will be bussed from our feeder elementary schools to come to Van Hoosen for a visit and tour. Students will have an opportunity to see our school, meet some staff and current students, and learn more about being in the 6th grade at VH.
- Musson students visit VH on May 5th
The Viking Experience
This is our Open House event on May 7th, 2024 from 5:00 – 6:30pm. Students and parents/guardians are invited to Van Hoosen to walk around and explore the building, see some classrooms, learn about extra-curricular activities including athletics, clubs, and intramurals, hear performances from our band/orchestra/choir, and socialize with our current Van Hoosen students and families.
Van Hoosen Registration & Viking Games
August 14th, 6th grade Van Hoosen students and parents/guardians will come to VH for registration. Students will receive their class schedule, locker assignment, textbooks, planners, etc. Students will have the opportunity to walk around the building and see where their classes will be. We will also be inviting students to join us in our Viking Games later that day. This is a student-only event where they will see old friends, make new friends, meet their VH Mentors, and catch the VH spirit! Students are asked to dress comfortably and prepare to have fun!
Email Information
We will be sending email updates throughout the summer, providing more detailed information about registration dates and times, Viking Games, etc. Please make sure to watch for these important updates.
Start of School!
The first day of school will be August 25, 2025! Our school day start time is 7:30am. 6th grade students typically start arriving to school around 7:10am, entering through the 6th Grade Entrance doors (closest to the parent drop-off loop).

Positivity Project Focus for: March 31 - April 4
Dear Families,
This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Humor. Humor means enjoying laughter and bringing smiles to others.
Humor helps us see the lighter side of things, making tough times easier and more fun. It doesn't mean you have to tell jokes, but people with humor often notice the funny moments in life and share them with others. Humor can lift people's spirits and help them through challenges. It’s important to help students understand how to use humor in a kind way, to lift others up, and never at someone else's expense.
To practice and encourage the character strength of humor at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!
