JOHN D. JENKINS ELEMENTARY
APRIL/MAY NEWSLETTER
A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMIN TEAM
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Spring Break and that the students are eager to return to school to finish up the last week of the third marking period. The last day of the third marking period is Monday, April 8, and report cards should be posted in ParentVUE no later than Friday, April 19. As we end the third marking period and enter the fourth and final marking period, it is important that you discuss with your students the importance of staying focused and keeping First Things First. We continue to focus on attendance and ensuring that students are in school daily. When students attend school regularly, they actively participate in learning, build valuable life skills, and prepare for future responsibilities, such as work, college, and other commitments.
The school year's fourth and final grading period brings us into end-of-the-year promotion ceremonies, class parties, vacation planning, and state assessments. While the last of these certainly isn’t as entertaining, these tests are incredibly important measures of student learning that our school and teachers take seriously. Therefore, you must encourage your student(s) to work up to their full potential to ensure that they do their best on these assessments. Students in Kindergarten will be administered the PALS and VKRP assessments and students in first through third grade will be administered the PALS assessment. Students in grades third, fourth, and fifth will be administered the reading and math SOLs. In addition, fourth graders will be administered the Virginia Studies SOL, and fifth graders will be administered the integrated reading and writing, and science SOLs. We would like to thank you in advance for partnering with us to ensure that your student(s) come to school daily and get a good night’s sleep because it will make a difference to their performance. Your student(s) teacher will be sending out an assessment calendar.
Kindergarten online registration is open for the upcoming school year. Please use the link below to register your student if he/she will be five years of age or older by September 30, 2024.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us with questions or concerns.
Your Admin Team,
Dr. Marlene Coleman, Principal

SCHOOL COUNSELORS' CORNER
Habit 3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play)
Habit Number 3 is about recognizing what is important, managing time, and organizing tasks. Modeling this behavior is the best way to teach it.
Ways to help with this habit at home:
· Talk about what happens if we don’t do something important first.
· Make a list of things to do.
· Create a monthly calendar.
· Plan an activity together.
Middle School Transition
All sixth-grade students will be enrolled in language arts, math, social studies, science, music, language literature, and PE. Extended language arts, math, and science will be based on teacher and PWCS recommendations.
Students who will attend Woodbridge Middle School must choose one music course (Band, Orchestra, and Chorus). Course selections must be completed by 4/19/2024. Please contact your child's school counselor, Ms. Scott-Bell, if you have questions.
Woodbridge MS Course selection form: https://forms.office.com/r/mcnw7erzFA
Beville Middle School representatives will be here on Friday, April 5 to help students select courses.

LITERACY
We love to read and write at Jenkins ES! April and May are some of the best months for literacy!
After Spring Break, we have a few weeks before the end of the year assessments. Grades K-2 will work on poetry while grade 3-5 will learn about different genres and opinion writing!
On Monday, April 8, fifth grade will take an Integrated Reading and Writing test where they read a passage and then write a response. Starting April 22, K-3 have their PALs tests and 3-5 have their Reading SOLs.
April 22- 3rd Grade PALs
April 24 & 25- 5th Grade Reading SOL
April 29- K PALs
April 30 & May 1- 3rd & 4th Grade Reading SOL
May 2- 2nd Grade PALs
May 6- 1st Grade PALs
During this busy Spring season, it is important to incorporate literacy activities into our daily lives. Check our a few tips below to help your family continue to love reading and writing together!
*Make a list as a family about things you’d like to do now that the weather is getting nicer. Have your child listen for the sounds in the words you are writing.
*Go to the public library and get your FREE library card! Did you know they have books that read to you at the library? They also have books you can hook up to your car to listen to while driving!
*Check out a used bookstore or Spring yard sales for books to add to your home library.
*Read nightly with your child! Take turns reading with your child and then talk about what you read!
Remember the best readers make the best leaders!
Your literacy leaders,
Ms. VanZetta and Ms. Wilson
MATH
Spring is here! As the temperatures rise and flowers begin to bloom, many of us are anxious to get outside. We know it is important to connect learning to the real world, and students at all levels are challenged to solve practical problems as part of the PWCS curriculum. We teach students using story problems and help them show their thinking using objects, pictures, and numbers. Using math in context can help your child make connections and develop stronger number sense.
Here are some suggestions to include math in your springtime adventures.
· Go on a nature walk and count the number of birds or flowers you see. Keep a journal and compare your results over time. How many can you count in one day or one week?
· Hang a thermometer outside where you can measure the temperature daily. Find the difference in temperature from one day to the next.
· Make a tally chart to record the weather. How many days are rainy, sunny, or cloudy? Make a graph to display the data for one month.
· Use chalk to draw and measure shapes on the sidewalk. Use measuring tools like rulers or non-standard units such as rocks or sticks.
· Measure how long it takes to complete an outdoor activity using a stopwatch or clock.
· Going on a trip? Keep track of your miles to find the total distance you have travelled.
Spring is also the time for end-of-year assessments here at school. Students in grades 3-5 need to be ready to show what they have learned in Math throughout the school year by taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. There are many resources available to help support the review of math concepts at home. Students can go to Clever and use IXL or SOL Pass to practice skills. There are also Virginia practice items found on TestNav. Your child’s teacher may have additional suggestions for review.
Please join us for our annual S.T.E.A.M. Night on Thursday, April 4, from 6:30-8:00. We will be offering engaging and fun activities involving Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. It is a great learning experience for the whole family. We hope to see you there!
Yours Mathematically,
Angela Savage & Karen Lanzetta
ART
Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated our fabulous artists at the Prince William All-County Fine Arts Festival recently. Our attendance was wonderful, and it was truly a terrific experience for everyone who stopped by. A big CONGRATULATIONS to 5th grader Marjorie A-G. for receiving the white ribbon award for our school!
Art Show Certificates have all been passed back to classroom teachers, and I am passing them all. A big shout-out to Jenkin's art club for sharing their Venus Fly Trap sculptures at the art show- they were a hit!
The Art Club has two more meetings this year: April 1st, and our final meeting on April 8th. Thank you, families, for bringing your artists to school so early on Mondays- you are appreciated.
We are continuing to collect empty cereal boxes and paper towel tubes this year. Gallon Ziplock bags are also needed in which to hand our amazing ceramics back to students.
Many thanks,
Mrs. Weldner
LIBRARY
The library is celebrating school library month! The school library is a great place to grab a new book to read or to find resources to help your learning. We have checked out over 18,000 books this year! Thank you for taking such good care of your library books and checking out new books to read every week.
Kindergarten through second grade has been reading all ten Virginia Readers' Choice books and each student will vote soon on their favorite book. The votes will be sent to the Virginia State Literacy Association, which will declare a winning book for Virginia. We will also be learning how to code using our Bee Bots.
Third through Fifth grade have been learning about a new website, www.wonderopolious.com where they can read an article about a wonder of the day or search for their own wonder. This website has over 2000 wonders and gives information to students in written and video form. April is poetry month, and students have learned about poetry and created their own poetry with a poetry choice board.
Thank you for supporting the library and your child's reading this year! If you need support with book suggestions or resource needs, please reach out to me.
Happy reading,
Jackie Youngblood
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)
We would like to send a huge thank you to all families who gave their time to help with Field Day. The kids had a wonderful time, and we could not have done it without you. Please know we appreciate you!
Students have spent these past few months learning various jump rope tricks, how to volley balloons and balls back and forth, as well as the correct way to bump a volleyball to teammates and over the net. All grades are about to start our long-awaited soccer unit. Fourth and fifth graders will soon be doing spring fitness assessments, as well as making individual nutrition goals. We look forward to tracking their fitness data to see how much everyone has improved since the beginning of the year.
