Union Middle Weekly Update V5.05!
September 15th, 2024
A Message From Mr. Feinberg
Hello Union Middle School Families,
It's eerie just how fast and sometimes how slow the school year feels at various points over our 180 days together. October and March are notoriously "slow" months where you assume you're on to the next month and it's only the 9th with three weeks to go. May & June are "fast" months because of all of the end of the year activities that take place. Likewise, the first few weeks of school have flown by... It's hard to believe that we are officially halfway through the first quarter as of this week and thus approximately 12.5% of the school year.
With it being the halfway point of a school quarter, our teachers will be updating PowerSchool to better reflect your student's progression thus far this school year. I ask that our staff have their grades updated by the end of this Wednesday, the official Mid Quarter Report (MQR) date. Please take a moment to review PowerSchool and ensure that your student is up to date themselves with their school and class work. As always, with middle school kids, trust but verify what assignments they still need to complete. Encourage them to reach out to their teachers for assistance. We want all of our students to feel successful at Union Middle, not just in their academics but also by learning the skills necessary to ensure their own positive growth in more challenging times. We are always here to help.
Your student may also begin to realize that their classes are increasingly in difficulty over the next few weeks. Like most schools, the first few weeks of the year are utilized by our staff for review of the year previous, getting to know you relationship building, and smaller assessments to be guide their instruction for the school year. We are now at that point where the curriculum becomes increasingly challenging, where a student may have multiple assessments on a single day, and missing any portion of a class period can have a negative affect on one's academic comprehension. My advice is to partner with your student and their teachers by reviewing powerschool regularly, speaking with your student about upcoming assessments, and ensuring that your student has a cell phone-free space in a quiet common area to complete their studies each night. These are routines that will benefit your student through their educational journey and beyond.
I'd also like to encourage your child to limit "bathroom breaks" during class time whenever possible. Missing even a few minutes of class time can be challenging for students to catch up and figure out what they've missed. One of the secrets of "doing school" that I've always strongly believe in is being present and participating in all of your classes. These expectations are "soft skills" that will benefit them in high school, college, and possibly grad school as well. Showing up and being present is the foundation for academic success.
Some quick reminders...

UMS Educator Profile - Matthew Cunningham
Mr. Matthew Cunningham has been in education for the past nineteen years, recently having joined UMS in 2020-21 as a 6th grade Math/Science teacher. Enjoy the following Q&A below as we get to meet Matthew Cunningham!
How long have you been at UMS? What do you love about being an educator at UMS? I've been here at UMS for 4 years and in the district for 19. What I love about being at UMS is that we not only focus on educating the students, but also helping them to be the best people they can be. The students themselves are also something I love about our school. They are genuinely good people who want to do well and who always seem to find some way to put a smile on your face.
What's one thing your students don't know about you that they would be surprised to find out? I once spent 10 days in Romania helping build an orphanage house for a group called Caminul Felix.
What are you most proud of in your career so far? Seeing former students become teachers themselves is always a pretty proud moment. Getting through distance learning would be a close second.
What are your words of wisdom? Find the people who really appreciate you for you.
What's one instructional practice that you've adopted for your classroom that you now cannot live without? Peer learning/instruction is something that has been huge for me. Learning to talk at the students less and really give them a chance to work through problems and learn with each other has been really effective, and is something I couldn't imagine not having as a part of my classes.
What made you want to become a teacher? I have a pretty large amount of teachers in my family who also happened to be great people. Having a profession that allowed you to help others in such a profound way seemed like a great path to take in life. I'm very glad I have taken that path!
