As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students and staff, we would like to inform you that video monitoring and consequently its audio recording, in some cases, may be used on school property, including school buses. CITIZENSHIP
Orange Shirt Day
To commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, recognized as a federal holiday, students and staff are encouraged to wear orange T-shirts on Friday, September 27. This date coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which serves to remind Canadians of the history of residential schools, to remember the victims, and to honour the survivors. The actual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation falls on September 30, which the Greater St. Albert Catholic School Board has declared a division-wide school closure day.
Orange Shirt Day is inspired by the experience of residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, who attended St. Joseph’s Mission School in British Columbia in 1973. Webstad’s grandmother had given her a shiny new orange shirt to wear on her first day of school, which she wore with pride. However, upon arriving at school, her new teachers took the shirt, along with the rest of her clothes. Her story symbolizes the stripping away of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children experienced over generations. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the spirit and intent of Orange Shirt Day and fulfills the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Call to Action No. 80.

Fostering Confidence in Children and Teens
September is a time of immense change for students, and oftentimes this uncertainty can take a toll on their confidence. Helping your child build confidence is key to their well-being and success. Here are a few tips to support their growth: Celebrate their successes and encourage them to set and pursue achievable goals. Offer consistent praise and constructive feedback, and be sure to support their interests and efforts. Engaging in open and positive conversations about their challenges and achievements will help them feel valued and capable. Your encouragement and understanding can empower your child to develop a strong sense of self-worth. Check out this article from Big Life Journal for more tips on how to help foster confidence in your child.
