Dear AMS Parents and Families,
As we head into another exciting week, I want to share some important updates and upcoming events:
- Saturday, December 7th: Our cheer team and members of the basketball team will be representing Apex Middle School Athletics in the Apex Holiday Parade. We are proud to see our students showcasing their school spirit in the community!
- Monday, December 9th: Our basketball season kicks off, with the girls’ and boys’ teams playing their first game at Pine Hollow Middle School.
- Tuesday, December 10th: The Winter Chorus Concert, Winter Nights, will take place at 7:00 PM in the school auditorium. Doors open at 6:40 PM. Join us for an evening of beautiful music and fun as we celebrate the season!
- Thursday, December 12th: Our basketball teams will play at home against Herbert Akins Middle School.
- Friday, December 13th:
- Interim reports will be available through PowerSchool. Students earning below a "C" in any class will also receive a paper copy to bring home.
- Don’t forget the Winter Dance from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, sponsored by our PTA. Drop-off and pick-up details will be shared closer to Friday.
- Friday, January 3rd: This day has been designated as a Teacher Workday, so there will be no school for students.
- Wednesday, January 8th: Save the Date! Our First Semester Art Show will be held from 6:00–7:00 PM in Building H.
We are excited about the opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and enjoy these memorable events. Thank you for your continued support of Apex Middle School!

The third of four payments was due yesterday, 12/5. If you haven't already done so, please log into SchoolCashOnline to make that payment today.
If you filled out a chaperone interest form to be a chaperone and haven't received an email from Mrs. Ruppert, please check your spam folder for an email sent out last month. We were able to accept all chaperones and would love for you to join us!
If you have recently decided you would like to be a chaperone, please email Mrs. Ruppert at mruppert@wcpss.net to start the process. We love to share this experience with families, so the more, the merrier!

Grade Level Updates
Quarter 2 Interims: Can you believe we are halfway through the second Quarter!? Paper copies of interims will be distributed to students who are currently earning a D or F in any core subject on Friday, December 13th. Interims need to be signed and returned to Homeroom teachers by Friday, December 20th. Please be sure you are regularly checking PowerSchool to keep up to date with your child's grades. Feel free to reach out to your child's Homeroom teacher if you have any questions.
March 13th - Myrtle Beach Field Trip: The final payment of $66 is due NEXT FRIDAY, December 13th. If you have any questions about what is owed for your child or you as a chaperone, please contact your child’s ELA teacher. Please note, chaperones have already been notified.
Artist in Residence: We are excited to share that our 6th grade students will have the unique opportunity to engage with Linda Gorham, an artist-in-residence who will bring ancient Greek myths to life through interactive storytelling! This special program will take place on Monday, December 16th during core 4. We believe it will be both educational and inspiring for our students. Ms. Gorham is a talented and experienced interactive storyteller who will guide students through three classic myths. She will present these stories in a way that will captivate students as she encourages participation and they will become part of the narrative through movement, voice, and imagination. We are so excited to welcome her!
6th Grade Updates
ELA UPDATES:
This week we will dive into the monologues of Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! “Students will read these monologues, told through the voices of children from a medieval village, to identify themes of adversity. They will focus on the author’s craft, specifically the use of figurative language and word choice, to better understand how the author conveys these themes.” -EL Education

MATH UPDATES:
All 6th grade students should be completing their assignments in DeltaMath and at least 5 lessons in Dreambox each week.
Math 6: We will finish Unit 3: Unit Rates and Percentages on Tuesday 12/10 with our End of Unit 3 Assessment. We will begin Unit 4: Dividing Fractions on Wednesday 12/11. Students will receive their Unit 4 workbooks on Wednesday and complete lessons 1-2. Math 6 students will take NC Check In A on Thursday 12/12 and Friday 12/13.
Math 6+: We will continue working on Unit 5: Dividing Fractions, completing lessons 5-16 in the student workbooks.

SCIENCE UPDATES:
This week we will be starting our unit on the earth’s structure. Students will be learning about the different layers of the earth and how convection currents in the mantle can cause the shifting and movement of the tectonic plates.
- Retests for the Waves unit will be offered this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES UPDATES:
This week, historians will be demonstrating their knowledge of ancient religions with an assessment Monday. Then, we begin our unit on Achievements. Students will look at achievements made in ancient civilizations, starting with writing, and moving to science and technology.

7th Grade Updates
- Fun Dinner Conversation Topic Featuring MATH: If everyone at the table could only speak in math equations, how would you say 'pass the salt'? Bonus Joke: Why was the equal sign so humble? Because it knew it wasn’t less than or greater than anyone else!
ELA UPDATES
This week, students will begin their position paper where they will take a stance about whether or not Lyddie should sign the petition for better working conditions. They will practice writing skills we have learned in class such as backing up claims with evidence, including a counterclaim, and using the “quote sandwich” (context, quote, analysis) technique. Please take some time to ask your student about this process and review their writing with them. By the end of the week, their outline should be complete and the final draft of their paper should be in the works!
- All students have signed the AI Usage Agreement in class stating that they will not use any form of AI (including ChatGPT or Grammarly) on this paper.
- ELA teachers offer working lunch every day except Tuesday and are available during class for extra support!
