Newport Tree Lighting
Each student will make an ornament at school to hang on the Christmas tree that will be on display at the city building. Students will walk to the city building to hang their ornament on the tree on Friday, December 6th. While there, students will also place their Santa letter in the city's Santa mailbox. Parents signed a year long permission slip. If you do not want your child to attend, please notify the office by calling 859-292-3011. The tree lighting will be on Saturday, December 7th. The community is welcome to attend the tree lighting beginning at 6:00pm. There will be light refreshments following.
School Delays or Closings
How does the wind chill affect school being delayed or closed?
During the winter months several factors come into play that could delay the start of the school day or cause school to be closed altogether. One such factor is the wind chill on a given day. On particularly cold mornings we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions. There are two possible scenarios that come from the National Weather Service; a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning. The National Weather Service in Wilmington, OH defines the two as the following:
Wind Chill Advisory: Wind chills between -10 and -24 degrees and at least a wind of 6 MPH or more
Wind Chill Warning: Wind chills -25 degrees and below with at least a wind of 6 MPH or more
When the National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Warning for Campbell County before the school day begins we will make a decision to close schools. It is quite likely we will make this type of decision on the morning of the day in question as it is hard to predict what the wind chill will be the night before. If there is a Wind Chill Advisory for the county, schools will likely be open unless there are operational problems with the bus fleet or mechanical problems in the school buildings. Buildings and the bus fleet are assessed in the morning prior to school by 6:00 AM.
As a parent if you determine that the weather conditions are too dangerous for your child to be out we respect your decision. You are free to contact your child’s school to request an excused absence for the day. Please make sure you contact the attendance office at your child’s school to report the absence.
Understand that the safety of our staff and students is our top priority when making the decision to delay or close school. We can assure you that our school buildings are warm, safe and an ideal place for students to be when it is extremely cold outside. Parents should make sure their child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather. The district urges students to wear winter hats, gloves, heavy coats and boots. Frostbite and hypothermia are serious risks and need to be taken into consideration by parents. If your child does not have a heavy coat, hat, boots or gloves please call the Family Resource Youth Service Center of his/her school; these centers have limited supplies to help those students in need.
To get more information on how the wind chill is calculated see the National Weather Service Wind Chill Chart from the National Weather Service.
Inclement Weather
When inclement weather arises, the Superintendent and his team will assess weather and road conditions before 5:00 a.m. If a delay or closure is necessary, notifications will be sent to all staff and student households via the School Messenger Alert System. Additionally, updates will be posted on our website at www.newportwildcats.org and shared with local television stations for wider dissemination.
This procedure also applies to other emergencies, such as power outages, water or heating issues, fires, floods, or similar situations, where the district determines adjustments to the school day are necessary for the safety of staff and students.
House Party - December 20th
In lieu of a traditional class party, our school will have a House party. No treats or candy are needed. Please do not send candy or treats in to school. Each House will participate in various activities with their house members. Preschool staff will communicate with preschool families about their celebration.
Lost & Found
The lost and found rack is setting inside the courtyard. The rack is available to parents daily during arrival and dismissal to check for items.

These wonderful resources provide families with information that will help them understand the academic standards and what their child is learning in a specific grade level. They provide tips on how you can help your child at home and what questions you can ask! You can download them in English or Spanish!
Special Area Report
Counselor's Corner
Newport Primary School teaches the Zones of Regulation to our students to support social-emotional learning. It is not only designed to teach children to identify their emotions and understand why they are feeling this way- but it offers the guidance and support needed to teach them how to cope with their emotions to feel better. Throughout the year, students are taught various strategies for their "tool-box" that help calm their bodies. Through a school-wide- common vocabulary, students can explain how they are feeling using colors, and identify a strategy to calm down, and get them back to "green" so they are ready to learn, both in and out of the classroom.

Attendance
Be Present, Be Powerful!
Facts About Attendance
Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.

By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
