SOUTHWEST ELEMENTARY FRIDAY NOTE
December 13, 2019
Conscious Discipline Corner
The holidays can be stressful... for SO many reasons for both adults and for kids. I thought I'd send a reminder on Composure... great reminders for school (and maybe home, too!) How can we change brain states and coach students to do the same? Composure is key!
8 Days of Christmas!
Don't forget the 8 Days of Christmas started this week! I hope you join in the fun as we push towards Christmas break!
Please note that I changed the activity on December 20th to "Ugly Sweater" Day! The link above is accurate.
Behavioral Matrix 2nd Semester Review
For the past few years, our students have participated in Expectation Stations the first week of school to "teach" the expected behaviors in and around the building. One of the goals for ELT was to have a "refresher" for students 2nd semester so ELT put together short (under 2 minutes) refresher videos that we ask you share with students the week of January 6th. Please fit these in as you see fit during the week. These videos will be shared prior to break.
More Reminders!
5 Essentials for STAFF & STUDENTS:
- Staff 5 Essentials to be complete by end of the day: December 20th (5 Essential Party at 2:30 p.m. in the Co-Lab on December 19th)
- 4th and 5th Grade Student 5 Essentials to be completed sometime during the day on December 19th.
Sub Plan Reminders: Tis the Season for sickness... take some time this upcoming week to review your sub plans. Do they need any updates? Is student information accurate? Do you have any things prepped in case of an emergency? I always had a 'bin' of extra activities and 'go to's' if I couldn't make it in or had to leave in a hurry.
Grade Level Meetings: A reminder that the Grade Level Notes are due and should be updated in Trello.
End of Quarter: Please consider updating Semester Grades and observations for your RTI students. Our next Check-In Cycle is January 29th, but doing a little update now will save you time later, especially if you have implemented a behavior plan or other intervention in the past few weeks that needs updating.
Facebook: Help me capture those amazing learning moments. I am required to post Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon to our district FB page. Sending me some shots of those great moments would help tremendously in showcasing the awesome things happening at Southwest.
Illinois State University Study
A childhood friend of mine, Alicia Hund, is a professor at Illinois State University. She contacted me and asked if I would try and recruit some teachers to complete a survey to help her complete some educational research. This is not mandatory by any means but I would greatly appreciate if you would find some time to take this survey. Maybe you'll win one of the Amazon gift cards. I tried to convince her that I should get one because I'm recruiting teachers for her but apparently it doesn't work that way. :)
Dear Teachers:
We are inviting elementary general and special education teachers in public schools in Illinois to participate in a research study about their attitudes and experiences surrounding teaching and learning. To be eligible, you must have worked with a student with an identified disability during the last three years. The study involves a short survey, which would take approximately 10-15 minutes. The Institutional Review Board at Illinois State University has approved this project (IRB-2019-242). Participation in the study is voluntary, and responses are anonymous. Upon completion of this survey, you will be eligible for a chance to receive one of four $15 Amazon gift cards. To learn more, please click here: (Qualtrics Link). Please complete this survey within two weeks. If you would prefer to complete a paper version of the survey, please contact us and one can be provided. If you have any questions about this research project, please feel free to contact Morgan Johnson at 847-533-1138 or mejohn3@ilstu.edu, or Alycia Hund at amhund@ilstu.edu. Thank you for your time and consideration.
