Title 1 Family Engagement April 2025
April Character Trait - Critical Thinker
April Is National Child Abuse Prevention Month
National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of communities working together to help families thrive and prevent child maltreatment. During the month of April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to increase awareness about child and family well-being, and work together to implement effective strategies that support families and prevent child abuse. Call 855-503-SAFE (7233) to report abuse or neglect of a child or adult in Oregon. If someone is being hurt or is in danger right now, call 911.

Elementary report cards will come home with your student. Please sign the envelope and have your student return it to their teacher. Middle school report cards will be mailed home.
Middle School Dance - Friday, April 4th from 5:00-6:30 pm
We will have a middle school dance on Friday, April 4th. The cost to attend is $5 and will include one slice of pizza and a bottle of water. There will be additional concessions available for purchase. Students will enter through the cafeteria doors.
- Only WSK8 6th-8th grade students are allowed to attend.
- All school rules and expectations apply to student conduct during this after school activity.
- Students need to stay inside and once they exit they will not be allowed to re enter.
- Students should not bring backpacks. Students with bags will be asked to check them in and get them at the end of the evening.

End of Year Tests to Measure Growth
During April we will do part of our spring testing to measure student progress from the beginning of the year in math and reading. We encourage students to do their very best when they take their test. We use information from these tests to ensure students are receiving the right supports to help them be proficient at grade level. There are a few things families can do to support their students at home.
- Ensure students get a full night's rest, turning off screens and devices
- Eat breakfast each morning
- Read at home
- Encourage students to take their time to do their best
- Ask them how they did on the test
4/7-4/11 MAP ELA (6th - 8th Grade Only)
4/14-4/18 MAP Math (K-8th Grade)
Parents of Middle School Students - Please encourage your students to be on time to class
As a school we want to ensure that we finish the school year strong. Part of that is being on time to class. We have noticed an increase in the number of students who are consistently late to class. When students come into class late, both the teacher and students lose focus on learning. Students have a four minute passing period to transition from one class to the next class. Many classes for middle school students are in the same hallway.
Starting after spring break students who have 3+ tardies in a week will be assigned an after school detention from 2:55 to 3:45 pm. Families will be notified and will need to provide transportation for their student home from school if this happens.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 541-553-1128.

Our Schools Need You – Join Us as a Substitute Teacher or Classified Substitute!
Make a Difference in Our Schools
Our students flourish when schools are fully staffed, but we need your help to keep our classrooms, buses, and cafeterias running smoothly! JCSD 509J is actively seeking substitute teachers, bus drivers, nutrition services staff, custodians, and educational assistants.
Why It Matters
When substitute teachers or staff positions go unfilled, these things could happen in our schools:
🚨 Teachers lose valuable planning time because they must cover classes.
🚨 Class sizes increase as students are split between other teachers.
🚨 Specialized learning support is interrupted, impacting students who need extra help.
🚨 Student routines are disrupted, which can lead to lower engagement and achievement.
By stepping in as a substitute, you help ensure that learning continues without disruption!
Why You Should Apply
✅ Flexible schedule – Work when it fits your availability.
✅ Competitive pay – Earn extra income while supporting students.
✅ Make a real impact – Help keep our schools running smoothly.

Career Week April 14-18th
Our goal is to prepare students to be future ready and part of this is providing opportunities for students to think about what they want to do when they graduate from high school. During the week of April 14th-18th we will have extra activities for students to think about future careers. A big thank you to our guest speakers who will be speaking to student groups about what they do and inspiring the next generation!
Spring Athletics & Clubs
Track and Field
Track will begin the week after spring break. Track is open to all 6th-8th grade students and is an excellent opportunity for students to be involved in school sports. There are events for everyone including running, throwing, and jumping. Students need to have a current sports physical and completed paperwork in order to participate.
Soccer
Soccer will begin the week after spring break. It is open to all 6th-8th grade students and is another great way for students to be involved in a sport. Students need to have a completed physical and paperwork completed to participate.
Return all Uniforms
We have a few missing uniforms from previous sports seasons. If you have a uniform at home please send it to school with your student to return to Mr. Vrana or the front office. Thanks for your help as we keep our uniforms organized for future seasons.
