Seniors Say: "I APPLIED!" to Colleges & Universities π
Redlands High School, Redlands East Valley High School, and Citrus Valley High School recently hosted their College Application Days, providing seniors with dedicated time and assistance to work on their college applications. βοΈ These events offered a supportive environment where students could navigate the often stressful and confusing application process with the help of school counselors, teachers, and staff. π€² Over 200 seniors at each school worked hard on applications ranging from our fantastic community colleges to prestigious universities across the country. πΊοΈ
A heartfelt "thank you!" to everyone who helped make these events such a success. π Special appreciation goes out to the teachers for encouraging seniors to participate and being flexible with their planning, allowing students to attend the workshops. π§βπ« The District college partnersβincluding staff from local community colleges and universitiesβjoined the schools during the workshops, providing one-on-one assistance and sharing their expertise on essay writing and financial aid. π« A big thank you to Child Nutrition Services teams who provided delicious snacks and meals for students to enjoy as they worked on their applications. π
Additionally, we are grateful to the recent graduates and volunteers who returned to help current students prepare for their next steps with patience and a positive attitude. π
These College Application Days truly showcased the collaborative spirit of RUSD schools and community. By working together, staff provided our seniors with the resources and support they needed during this important time. β³ Congratulations to all who participated. Look forward to seeing everyone at graduation! π§βπ
GIS Day 2024: Mapping the Future Together πΊοΈ
On November 20, the District celebrated the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) during the annual GIS Day event. The event, organized by the Educational Technology, Innovation, and Accountability Department, was livestreamed at Redlands East Valley High School and featured a fantastic keynote address by Gabe Schine. π This event highlighted how GIS technology helps everyone better understand and navigate the world. π§
Zooming in from the East Coast, Gabe shared his unique perspective as both a firefighter π§πΌβπ and GIS Analyst. π§ His expertise has been instrumental in the development of Watch Duty, an app providing real-time wildfire information to keep communities safeβa resource many relied on during the recent Line Fire. π₯
Gabe shared his insights into the critical role GIS plays in emergency response and public safety. βοΈ Students and staff had the opportunity to engage directly, asking questions and expressing their gratitude to Gabe and the team behind Watch Duty for their lifesaving efforts. πͺ This year's GIS Day event was a testament to innovation, education, and the power of technology to make a meaningful difference everywhere. π

Empowering Digital Citizens: How eAcademy, Franklin, and Judson & Brown Are Leading the Way
π The District is proud to share that three of our schoolsβeAcademy, Franklin Elementary, and Judson & Brown Elementaryβhave earned the prestigious title of Common Sense Media Certified Schools! β This recognition highlights their dedication to equipping students with the tools they need to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. π§βπ»
To achieve this certification, these schools implemented a comprehensive digital citizenship program that emphasizes critical online skills. π Students learned about essential topics such as online safety, protecting their privacy, communicating respectfully, and managing screen time. π» Educators also partnered with families by offering workshops and sharing resources, creating a bridge between classroom learning and healthy technology habits at home. π€
The benefits of this achievement for our students are profound. πͺ They are now better prepared to recognize and avoid online risks, such as cyberbullying or misinformation, and have developed a stronger sense of balance when it comes to technology use. βοΈ Additionally, theyβve gained confidence in using digital tools to explore, learn, and express themselves creatively. πΌοΈ
We are incredibly proud of the educators, staff, and families at eAcademy, Franklin, and Judson & Brown for their hard work and commitment to helping our students thrive in todayβs digital landscape. π Together, weβre building a generation of informed, responsible, and empowered digital citizens. π
Certificated and Classified Spotlights!
Classified Spotlight: Curriculum & Assessment Tech Melissa Salazar
π Meet Melissa Salazar, our Curriculum & Assessment Tech in the Instructional Technology & Accountability Department! π» She started this position in July 2024, but she's no stranger to our district!
π She began as a long-term substitute in the Assessment and Student Data office. She then spent four years as the AP Secretary at Moore Middle School, followed by five years as the Office Assistant in Technology Services. Before stepping into her current role, she served as the Data Clerk III in the Instructional Technology & Accountability Office for four years. π
ποΈ A day in Melissa's life at the District Office is nonstop! From the moment she starts in the morning, it's "go, go, go!" π Melissa loves ensuring that the programs students use in the classroom are up and running. π
π₯° Some of Melissa's favorite moments include watching her own children play school sports like basketball and baseball. π βΎ She also cherishes the weekly department meetings where the department collaborates, brainstorms, and builds strong working relationships. She says these moments help them become a stronger, more unified department for the students and parents in the district! π€
β€οΈ To Melissa, representing Redlands Unified School District means getting opportunities every day to help the students and parents in her community. "It's all about making a positive impact where I live," she says. π
πΆ A fun fact about Melissa: When she was young, she attended Redlands Pre-School in the very building that now houses Technology Services! π« Talk about coming full circle!
Certificated Spotlight: Middle School History Teacher Brandon Benjamin
π Meet Brandon Benjamin, a 7th & 8th grade history teacher at Cope Middle School! π He's entering his third year at Cope, but teaching isn't the only hat he wears in our district. π Brandon is currently the head coach for RHS's Girls Basketball Program! π
π In his time with RUSD, he has also been an ASB Director, a middle school Volleyball and Basketball coach, and is currently one of his school's CJSF Coordinators! π
ποΈ Brandon describes his life at Cope as an adventure! "Just like for the students, every day brings new challenges, new opportunities, and plenty of moments to laugh and be grateful for this job." π
π He loves making people laugh! He sees humor as one of the greatest tools in his classroom, and he enjoys seeing students engage with the content, laugh, and connect with the material. π
The same goes for his coworkersβhis favorite moments are those small instances throughout the day where they can share stories and laugh together. π€
π To Brandon, representing Redlands Unified School District means setting the standard! π₯ Whether it's engaging students, showing up on days when it's tough to get out of bed, or even dressing up for fun spirit days, representing RUSD means leading by example. π―
π΅ Fun fact about Brandon: He loves music but has never been to a concert! π€ He's looking to change that this year.
π£οΈ Advice for students & families: "To students and families, I would stress the importance of just showing up! Half the battle is just about being present, being involved, and being dedicated. No one expects 100% every dayβbut everyone can show up, be present, and give as much as they have!" πͺ

School Communications
Parent Communication: What to Expect ππ
Staying informed is key to a smooth school year (for everyone!). Outlined below are ways the district as well as school sites will communicate with you.
π’ District Communication
The District will send monthly newsletters, letters from the Superintendent, and updates through ParentSquare containing important information and various action items. ParentSquare is also an app you can download on your phone and set up your personal communication preferences. Seeing too many emails? You can adjust your notification preferences to digest mode and only receive one email from both your child(ren)'s school and the district in one readers digest format (click here to see how!). You can also enable text and push notifications (which we recommend in case of emergency). π²
In an effort to effectively and efficiently communicate with our staff, families, and community members, the Redlands Unified School District has adopted an electronic flyer communication tool, Peachjar. If you have any questions regarding this new digital flyer service, please email peachjar@redlands.k12.ca.us π
The District also uses social media to share positive stories and happenings throughout the district, in addition to important dates and reminders. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, X (Formerly Twitter), YouTube, and LinkedIn! π±
π« School Site Communication
School site communication varies depending on site and grade level. However, all sites will send out either weekly or monthly newsletter-style communication through ParentSquare. For questions related to school site communication, please reach out to the site directly!
