Curriculum Focus:
Each week we will share with you what our students are learning in our focus departments this term, below you will find the topics for English.
Year 7:
This term, students in Year 7 have been given their first introduction to thematic poetry. Studying poems that reflect different relationships, students have spent their lessons considering how poets construct images with their language and attempt to communicate abstract emotions through their words.
Year 8:
This term, students in Year 8 have been reading the non-fiction, autobiographical memoir of ‘I Am Malala’, written by the Nobel Prize winning Malala Yousafzai. As a young girl, Malala was attacked by the Taliban for protesting in the name of girls’ education in Pakistan. This text offers students the opportunity to engage at length with a piece of non-fiction, rather than focusing on smaller extracts as is normally the case. Students will consider how the author captures their own experiences and communicates their values and ideals before beginning to consider how they might tell their stories about their own lives.
Year 9:
Maintaining the theme of conflict that runs throughout Year 9, students have been studying ‘Salt to the Sea’, a novel of historical fiction. The novel explores the deadliest maritime disaster in history, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship transporting refugees from East Prussia at the end of the Second World War. Students will explore the author’s use of language in constructing characters, themes and narrative – considering how the author ties together the narratives of multiple different characters.
Year 10:
This half term, students will be introduced to the 15 poems, selected by AQA, as part of their ‘Power and Conflict’ cluster of poetry. In their lessons, students will explore how each of the poems constructs a poetic voice that either experiences conflict or attempts to interpret the power dynamic in a certain situation. For example, in one poem, students may consider how nature is depicted as a powerful force, while in another they may consider the internal conflict that emerges from soldiers on the battlefield. Next term, while also revising the core knowledge learned this half term, students will have the opportunity to begin comparing these poems and considering how power or conflict may be presented similarly or differently by the poets.
Year 11:
Year 11 continue to revise in preparation for their forthcoming exams. Lessons are currently alternating between preparing students for their exams in English Language and English Literature, revisiting the core skills that are required to succeed in the exams, recapping the analysis of core quotations, and consolidating knowledge to support their independent revision.
Year 12:
Year 12 have begun the production of their NEA in English Language and Literature. Each student has selected their primary literary text, with selections ranging from ‘The Da Vinci Code’ to ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, and begun to consider which non-literary sources they might choose to further illuminate their understanding of the text they have chosen.
Year 13:
Year 13 continue to revise for their forthcoming exams. Current lessons are being used to consolidate students’ knowledge of the core texts that have been studied throughout the past two years while also providing students with an opportunity to practise their language analysis skills
