PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
As we turn the page to February, a month filled with hope, love, and fresh starts, I'm excited to start the new semester! This time marks an opportunity to build upon the successes of the past and set ambitious goals for the future. Take a moment to celebrate your child's achievements from the previous semester. Did they master a new skill? Excel in a particular subject? Acknowledge their efforts and encourage them to reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement. Work with your child to set goals for the new semester.
We want to continue to partner with you and want to ensure open and consistent communication between us and our families. This is crucial for student success. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers or the office with any questions or concerns. Your active involvement in your child's education makes a significant difference. We have some fun activities coming up and would love to see you at these family events. See the calendar below.

Paper Tutor 6th-8th Grade
If you have a middle school student, have you heard of Paper Tutor? Our scholars have access to 24/7 tutoring (by a real person). They have an app on their iPad that can help them with homework as well as classwork. These tutors will even help edit their papers. Paper Tutor is a one year pilot for EPHS and SCMS to see how it will help support our students. See the slide show below to learn more about Paper Tutor and ask your child about it. It truly is amazing. If you have any questions regarding this resource don't hesitate to reach out to their teacher or contact our office and Mrs. Isackson would be happy to share how it works.

- Top 25% of users and above for students in the following two combined categories:
- Total session time for live tutoring
- Amount of writing reviews (essays)
- Placement in the to 25% allows for one entry in raffle
- Placement in the top 10% allows for three entries in the raffle
- Top 25 students overall get two additional entries (five total entries)
- Three winners from the raffle and one independent winner
- One large prize for for the last drawing:
Main Prize: Up to $500 value - Two small prizes that are drawn first:

Information From Our SCS PTO
- PTO Meetings take place on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 pm in Room 6 at the School. Come help us plan and support winter & spring school activities! We need you!
February Character Trait
This month we are having conversations and experiences with our scholars to help us develop the social-emotional skill of Honesty! We are using this definition at school:
Honesty: is being truthful in what you say and do.
One way to think about Honesty is “being truthful in what you say and do.” Practicing Honesty helps strengthen our relationships and reduce stress.
Honesty is 1 of 3 traits we will or have focused on throughout this year that helps students Be Well. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management.
Here are some questions you may want to ask and talk with your child at home to connect what we are doing at school. These are great conversations to have around the dinner table.
- Can you share or show me what Honesty means?
- Why is it important to know how something makes you feel?
- When you are Honest, how does it make you feel? Why?
- How do you know if you are being Honest with yourself?
- Share how being Honest with ourselves can help us to be more confident, calm, or focused when we are feeling stressed.

Become a Volunteer
Classroom parties and field trips are starting to pop up, as well as, parents wanting to volunteer in the classroom on a regular basis. ONLY those that have applied and have been approved through our district volunteer process will be allowed to participate in volunteering. This process is for the safety of all of our scholars.
Anyone may apply to become a volunteer. Before taking part in a volunteer activity, applicants must complete a criminal background check.

Referrals
What is a referral? This is a way we collect data on behaviors. Sometimes referrals come with a consequence, whether it be a natural consequence or disciplinary action.
If a staff member writes a referral then they must look at the definition matrix to determine if it truly is a referral and/or if it is a minor or major referral. We share this matrix with our students and it is also located in the student handbook, which is located on the student's iPad. As a staff we calibrate with this matrix so that we are all writing referrals the same way and for the same behavior.
Staff members are required to contact a guardian when a referral is written and we appreciate your support when we make this call. We understand that students are here to learn and grow. Our goal is to change an undesirable behavior and for the student to learn from this.
CANVAS - PARENTS AS OBSERVERS
Eagle Point School District uses Canvas, a learning management system (LMS) to provide teachers, students, and families tools that enhance learning and communication both inside and outside of the school building. Teachers use Canvas to deliver course materials, contact information, and utilize the calendar feature, which puts all of your child's assignments and other important date information for all courses into one, color-coded calendar. Canvas helps keep a student's school life simple, as all course information is found within one tool, not scattered across many. How to access my student's CANVAS as a parent observer. Here is a link to more information regarding Canvas. (Some of our primary teachers also use SeeSaw. Please contact your child's teacher for more information about if they use SeeSaw.)
IPAD INSURANCE
iPad insurance is $25 per student. It may be paid through ParentVue or by sending check or cash to school with your scholar. We highly recommend this insurance. You never know when an accident is going to happen. If you have not paid the insurance then you will be responsible for the cost to fix or replace the iPad.
IPad insurance is an annual fee. If you had insurance for the 2022-23 school year it is still effective until September 6, 2023. During the 2023-2024 school year, EPSD9 will continue to offer optional iPad insurance to students and families. The annual insurance will be effective from September 6, 2023-September 5, 2024. The cost for the insurance is $25.00. Without insurance, students will be responsible for all repair or replacement costs. If your student did not have iPad insurance for the 2022-23 school year, students will need to bring their iPad to the office to verify the condition of the iPad prior to acceptance of your insurance payment. Dress Code
Additional Dress Code Information
Cologne and perfume should be limited due to safety and allergy concerns.
Dressing in layers allows for comfortable weather changes throughout the day. Please be sure to label your child’s clothing.
Students should wear comfortable clothing that will allow them to participate in school activities.
Student shoes should be appropriate for playground play and please note your child’s PE schedule in order to send your child to school with the appropriate footwear for PE activities. Flip flops, platform sandals, or high heels are not safe footwear at school and are highly discouraged.
All students must wear shoes at all times at school. Shoes with attached wheels (Example: “Heelys”) are not allowed at school.
Any clothing that is considered to be gang related will not be allowed.
Unusual hairstyles that are distracting to the learning environment, need constant attention, or obstruct the student’s vision are discouraged.
Keep your hands, arms, legs and clothing free of writing or markings. Sharpies are not allowed for student use at school.
All decisions of dress and grooming appropriateness are at the discretion of the principal or the principal’s designee.
