SPEECH AND DEBATE UPDATE
One-hundred and ninety-one students from forty-eight schools and ten states attended the Loyola Invitational this past weekend.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate, junior Sterling Utovac was the tournament champion. Senior Aaron Yi reached the semifinal round (top 4), where he was walked over (a walk-over occurs when students from the same school are paired in elimination rounds, in which case the higher seed advances). Seniors Brian Son and Shawn Lo reached the double-octafinal round (top 32). Seniors Austin Loui and Kensho Nishio and junior Dalton Ngo had winning, 4-2 records but missed clearing on tiebreakers. Sterling was also the tournament's third place speaker. In the round robin division, Austin was fifth speaker.
The tournament also hosted a scrimmage for first and second year policy debaters. In first year policy debate, the freshmen teams of Isaura Aguilar Valladares and Riley Meagher, Evan Chang and Daniel Jo, and Kaiyan Dhall and Matthew Song finished with perfect 3-0 records. Riley was also the tournament's top speaker. In second year policy debate, the sophomore teams of Jack Erickson and Claire Shim and Xavier Burchfield and Jaden Tarng finished with winning, 2-1 records. Jack was top speaker and Claire second speaker. Freshman Logan Zhang was third speaker.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES
Wellness Tip: Save the Crisis Text Line 988 in your phone for yourself or someone you love to call or text 988 in times of need.
September is Suicide Prevention Month
As we recognize those we’ve lost to suicide, we work diligently to prevent more loss and keep our young people safe. Here are a few facts about suicide and ways you can help:
- Suicidal thoughts, like many mental health challenges, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender and background.
- Know the warning signs for suicide like increased alcohol and drug use, aggressive behavior, withdrawal from friends, family and community, dramatic mood swings and impulsive or reckless behavior.
- Other behaviors to look out for include collecting and saving pills or buying a weapon, giving away possessions, tying up loose ends, like organizing personal papers or paying off debts, and saying goodbye to friends and family.
- Ask direct questions: Do you have thoughts about suicide? Are you thinking of killing yourself? It will not put the idea in someone’s mind.
- Keep the Crisis Text Line handy and save 988 in your phone.
- Join a QPR Suicide Prevention or Mental Health First Aid training – Beach Cities Health District and allcove offer these trainings nearly every month.
- QPR Suicide Prevention Training on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 4:30 - 6 p.m.
- teen Mental Health First Aid Training on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 25 and Oct. 2 at 4 - 5:30 p.m.
Help is available.
