GLOBE Update
September 5, 2024
A message from the Executive Director
Dear GLOBE community,
I am writing to follow up on this morning's community-wide email about our safety protocols at GLOBE and an Upper Campus communication sent about an incident that occurred yesterday. We have heard your concerns and confusion about the timing of these communications, as well as the audience they were sent to, and want to share more detail where we can.
We have also moved up our annual Safety Coffee Talk from October to next Thursday, September 12, at 8:30am in the Upper Campus Cafeteria. We will be able to provide some hypothetical scenarios and what steps we would take in that situation. All GLOBE families are invited to attend. The presentation will be recorded for anyone who can't attend. Look out for further details tomorrow, in an email from our Director of Operations, Jen Parker.
Regarding safety protocols for GLOBE at large:
We have a strict protocol–based on county and state law, as well as the DCSD Code of Conduct–for any threat brought to our attention. Once we learn about a threat, we immediately pursue an investigation with a team that may include school and building administrators, counselors, social workers, and School Resource Officers. Based on the answers and information we collect, we determine the appropriate action to take, and communicate that course of action.
Regarding the incident at Upper Campus and the communications sent about it:
Yesterday, an isolated incident involving a sixth grade student prompted an investigation. After interviewing students and staff, and following protocol as outlined by the DCSD Code of Conduct, we determined the incident did not present a threat to other fellow students or staff. There was not a weapon on campus. After the investigation was completed this morning, a communication was sent to other sixth grade families, and then the Upper Campus community, to keep them informed and encourage dialogue with their children.
I know that some families in our community would like additional information regarding this incident. Please know that because of county and state law, we cannot disclose certain details, such as the student’s identity and any potential disciplinary action. More broadly, we are deeply committed to protecting the confidentiality of our student body and their families, and upholding our core values of CREST.
Finally, in the wake of yesterday's tragic event in Barrow County, many families have asked about our protocol in the instance of a shooting threat. In such a situation, our team would immediately evacuate students and staff to previously identified spaces. We keep these locations confidential for the safety of students and staff. We also have staff who are assigned roles to alert authorities, call parents, and perform other necessary measures.
We have received emails and calls from concerned parents seeking reassurance about the safety of their children over the last day. And as a parent, I understand your concerns and fears personally and deeply. Please know that GLOBE is unwavering in its commitment to the safety and well-being of all our students and staff.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we work together to maintain a safe and positive learning environment for all our students.
In partnership and service,
Christi Elliott-Earby
Executive Director
