From Mr. Straka:
We had another great week! Hopefully, the weather is finally starting to turn, and we are able to enjoy the outdoors. Please remember to send your JETS with appropriate gear to go outside daily for recess.
Mister Brown is coming to Jerusalem- May 20th
Our JETS found out last week that Mister Brown is coming to Jerusalem on May 20th! He will spend the entire day with us, and will be doing a Family Event that evening for all of the Jerusalem students and their families. More info to come on the Family Event. A huge thank you to PBF Energy and the JPG for sponsoring this event!
Our students found out this information during March Family Time. They had to "crack the code" to release this video announcement from Mister Brown.
Staff Spotlight:
This week's staff spotlight is on:
Mr. Durnwald: Evening Custodian
Mrs. Maher: Speech Language Pathologist
If you see these individuals, make sure to thank them for all they do!!
Congrats to our Own:
Recently, several fourth-grade students at Jerusalem Elementary School participated in the Tenth Annual Ode to the Zip Code Poetry Contest. This contest is a partnership between The Fair Housing Center, The Arts Commission, Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Toledo City Paper, and Toledo Area Parent. This poetry contest invites local residents of all neighborhoods and ages to submit short poems inspired by their ZIP Code. The number of words in each line of the poem is determined by the corresponding digit of their ZIP Code. Jerusalem fourth-grader, Theo Decker, recently found out that he is a finalist in the contest and has been invited to read his poem on April 19 at the Toledo School for the Arts at 2:00P.M. We will be cheering you on and wishing you the best, Theo!
Here is Theo's Poem:
Dogs in the distance
Cars driving by
Snow falling down on the ground
Calmness
So much in a simple neighborhood

Safety Town 2025:
SAFETY TOWN is an organized safety education program for children entering kindergarten from Oregon and the surrounding communities. Safety awareness is taught and practiced in SAFETY TOWN, a city built to a child's scale. Teachers, police, and fire personnel, with the assistance of teen volunteers, cover topics such as pedestrians, motorists, buses, railroads, water, animals, and other various safety-related issues. Movies, songs, games, and practice inside SAFETY TOWN will complement the daily classroom activities. Each session is five days (see below for times). All children must be potty-trained.
All participants must pay a $30 registration fee or contact Officer Shaw (see below) before Friday, May 16, 2025. A full refund is given if a need to cancel is made before May 16, 2025. A partial refund of $10 will be given if cancellation is before Friday, May 30, 2025. Make your check payable to the "City of Oregon" and send it in with the completed registration form to Oregon Police Division/Safety Town, 5330 Seaman Rd., Oregon, Ohio 43616. All registrants may turn in their payment and a completed registration form at the Oregon Police Division's Main Lobby in an envelope marked "Oregon Police Safety Town." All registrant payments and registrations may be turned in at the Coy, Starr, or Jerusalem Elementary school offices. Those seeking a financial. hardship scholarship must e-mail Officer Shaw before Friday, May 16, 2025, at sshaw@oregoncs.org or call 419-698-7186.

ClassDojo:
ClassDojo is a communication app for the classroom. It connects teachers, parents, and students who use it to share photos, videos, and messages through the school day. They use ClassDojo to work together as a team, share in the classroom experience, and bring big ideas to life in their classrooms and homes. Jerusalem teachers may be using ClassDojo in a variety of ways within their classroom throughout the school year. Not all teachers are currently using this tool within their classroom at this time, as it is their choice. Some teachers will continue to communicate with parents through email, phone, newsletters, etc. However, we encourage you to sign up for ClassDojo to receive important building updates/messages from Mr. Straka. Information on signing up for ClassDojo will be sent home from your child’s teacher.
Cell Phones and other electronic devices:
Just a reminder that all cell phones, smartwatches, and other personal electronic devices must be turned off and placed in the student’s lockers upon arriving at school. These devices are often a distraction to students, and are not permitted to be with students during the day. Thanks for your cooperation!
From the Office:
Parent pickup at the end of the day. All calls should be made by 3:00 and no later. This will give the teacher time to check messages and drastically reduce the possibility of the student being in the wrong line. Thank you for your understanding.
Deliveries for Students:
Jerusalem Elementary has implemented a system for items to be delivered to students once the day begins. Please leave items on the table outside the office door, complete the delivery log, and notify the secretary of your delivery. Thanks for your cooperation!
School Supplies:
This year, we have decided to purchase a variety of school supplies for each classroom to start the year. This allowed us to decrease the number of items that parents are responsible for purchasing.
For a list of school supplies for each grade level, click here.
Morning Drop-Off Routine:
Please see the following important information involving the morning drop-off routine for students. Students will not be permitted to enter the building until 8:50 am. Please do not let your child(ren) exit the vehicle until the main entrance doors are opened. Thanks for your cooperation!
Please drive slowly.
Please drop off your student(s) between the Safety Markers (plastic figures with flags). Do not drop off outside of this zone.
Please stay in the car drop-off line until your child(ren) exits the vehicle. Do not drive around other vehicles to move ahead in line, or to exit the lot.
Please have any and all children in your vehicle exit on the building/driver side of the vehicle.
Do not park in the drop off line. We need to keep the traffic moving. It is preferred that students are dropped off in the identified zone, rather than walked into the building. If you need to enter the building for an appointment you must park your vehicle in a parking space, and carefully walk your child(ren) into the building.
Thank you for following these procedures, as we all work together to make the arrival process safe for students, parents, and staff.
Parent Pick Up Cards:
Student Dismissal:
To help with the flow of traffic, parent pick-up students will be dismissed to the main entrance beginning at 3:30 pm. Please be sure to have your pick-up card out, and your child(ren)’s card attached to their book bag in a visible location. Please be patient with this process. If you don’t have a parent pick-up card, you will be asked to enter the office and provide your ID.
For your child(ren)'s safety, we will only release students to parents/guardians with matching pick-up cards that are waiting in the lobby.
From Officer Jeff:
Please speak with your children about their three rally points at Jerusalem Elementary School. If possible, make sure they are able to show you where all three rally points are located. Today we discussed rally points and the importance of knowing where to go during a critical incident at school, which would possibly require them to evacuate the school building. Your children also reviewed the importance of recognizing strangers and the importance of situational awareness. In the near future, our students will be having stranger / danger drills on the playground. They must learn to recognize a threat on the playground and immediately report their findings to the monitor, before they immediately evacuate the area. It is very important that we teach our children to be proactive in life. Thank you, Officer Jeff
From Nurse Jo:
