The Wayland Union Board of Education met on Monday, February 10th, at Steeby Elementary for their regular meeting.

Presentations/Reports
Steeby Elementary Building Report
- Karri Bailey began her presentation by introducing and thanking her staff members who were able to attend the meeting. She shared that the three categories Steeby Elementary focuses on are culture, behavior, and academics. These three categories are supported by Capturing Kids Hearts, a sensory room, two sensory walks, social-emotional lessons, inclusivity, volunteer support, WIN (what I need) time, Title 1 support, and essential standards. By implementing multiple levels of support, major behaviors have decreased, assessment scores have increased, and students/staff members are excited for each new day.
Committee Meeting Report - Safety & Security Committee
- Jeff Koon shared that they discussed the AEDs throughout the district, including 2 new AEDs that were recently purchased. We are currently testing an outdoor AED cabinet with the hope of purchasing more in the future. Our district-wide radio systems recently had a software update. They discussed the possibility of portable metal detectors, but at this point they don't feel the need to move forward with that purchase. They also discussed safety concerns with the upcoming bond construction at the high school, but a plan is in the works.
Report from MASB Winter Institute
- Erin Stepek shared that she attended the CBA 101 class virtually. Norman Taylor shared that he attended 3 classes virtually throughout the day. Both felt that the day was well worth their time. They were also asked to share our "Who do you call" graphic and the Board Operating Procedures with other school board members who were in attendance.
Student Board Members Report
- Matthew Chubb and Teagan Robinson shared that the high school student body is preparing for the end of second trimester. Robotics is working on building their robot for their first competition in mid-March. Student Council would like to thank everyone for participating in their Coaches vs Cancer event, they were able to raised $22,000. A majority of winter sports are coming to an end with regionals and districts right around the corner.
Governance Team Good News
- Pete Zondervan shared that his family is finally through sickness. Erin Stepek shared that she saw the HS presentation of "Tuck Everlasting", participated in Odyssey of the Mind, and Solo/Ensemble this past weekend.

Administration Reports
Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operations
- Leslie Wagner shared the year to date revenues vs expenditures. John Huyck was able to walk through the district with a vendor for the next steps in the Filter First initiative. The new partition for the middle school gym recently arrived. Scott Larsen and Leslie Wagner were able to complete the SFA-VCR report, which makes sure we are compliant with federal regulations for our food service department. Our transportation department recently completed Traversa training.
Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services
- Teresa Fulk shared that we had five teams compete in Odyssey of the Mind this past weekend, of the four teams that were eligible to qualify for the state competition, two of them did. Title II and Title IV dollars are being designated to allow several staff members to attend conferences. She recently met with representatives from Xello, the middle school, and the high school to learn more about the programs offerings.
Superintendent
- Tim Reeves shared that he is staying up to date on the changes that are occurring with federal funding and immigrations, specifically with how it relates to school districts. He also shared that some bond committee members recently toured the newly built Caledonia Pool Complex. Our local Leisure Life group was able to tour the new Administration Office and they are very excited. He also shared that at the end of the month on February 26th, our high school dance department is hosting a "Dancing with the Star Staff" fundraiser.
NEW BUSINESS - Discussion Items
MASB Board of Directors - Region 6
- Theresa Dobry shared that the board has a document they need to read. The board will cast 1 vote.
Revised Board Operating Procedures
- Becky Hohnke would like to redo the social contract to accommodate the new board members. Pete Zondervan would also like to discuss how committee structure is going to look. These topics will be revisited during the work session meeting in two weeks.

Board Member Comments
Stephanie Tromp would like to thank Steeby Elementary for hosting the meeting.
Pete Zondervan shared that he was able to attend the Daddy Daughter Dance hosted by the Dorr Elementary PTO, he had a lot of fun. He also thanked the Steeby Elementary staff members who presented during the meeting.
Jeff Koon shared that he was able to attend the "Tuck Everlasting" play this past weekend, and he thought they did a phenomenal job. He gave a shout out to the students who lead the pledge of allegiance, they were one of the loudest groups we have had. He also shared that this is an exciting time for the district with the pool bids being approved.
Becky Hohnke thanked Karri Bailey for hosting the meeting, she loved hearing about the inclusive practices.
Norman Taylor thanked Steeby Elementary for hosting the meeting. He also thanked everyone who participated in the Coaches vs Cancer fundraiser last week.
Erin Stepek thanked everyone who presented at the meeting tonight. She enjoyed being reminded of how much is going on within the district at any given moment.
Theresa Dobry enjoyed hearing about the changes that Steeby Elementary is implementing in their building.
Tim Reeves shared that last week Wednesday there was an internal miscommunication regarding the timeline of the pool construction. A correct timeline will be shared with the public soon, now that the bids are approved.
