Attendance Reminders and Notifications
As some families may be aware, the school sends home a letter when a child reaches 10 days absent and/or tardy from school during a 45-day term. Beginning this month, we will also be notifying families when a student reaches 5 days absent and/or tardy.
Research has shown that attendance on a daily basis is essential to school success. Our days at Placentino are filled with learning activities that will prepare your child for future educational success. Our first “bell” sounds at 8:50am. The second “bell” sounds at 8:55am. Children are considered tardy when they arrive after 8:55am.
School Wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lessons
Preschool and Kindergarten
During the month of May teachers and students in preschool and kindergarten engaged in a read aloud of Yoko by Rosemary Wells.
This children's picture book follows the endearing character Yoko, a little kitten with a big heart. The story revolves around Yoko's experiences as she starts school and faces the challenges of being different from her classmates. Yoko, who brings sushi for lunch, encounters initial hesitation and unfamiliarity from her peers who have more traditional lunches. The heartwarming narrative explores themes of diversity, acceptance, and the beauty of embracing differences. As Yoko strives to find acceptance, the story unfolds with a mix of humor, friendship, and lessons about celebrating individuality.
Conversation Starters:
- Food is an important part of culture and family, what are some special meals you have as a family over the course of the year?
- Have you talked to your family about what makes some of the food so special?
- Have you ever noticed a friend or classmate bringing unique food to school?
Grades 1 & 2
During the month of May teachers and students in first and second grade engaged in a read aloud of Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell.
When Molly Lou Melon starts at a new school Ronald teases her for being short, having buckteeth, and a voice that sounds like "a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor." Molly remembers what her grandmother told her to always feel good about herself, which helps her overcome Ronald’s taunts.
Conversation Starters
- Molly’s grandma said "Walk as proudly as you can and the world will look up to you.” What so you think she meant by that?
- What have we learned about Molly? How does she feel about herself? What did grandma tell her? What does this mean?
- How did Molly’s life change? How do you think this will change her? How would you feel if you had to move to a new neighborhood and school?
- What happened to Ronald to make him feel foolish? Do you think that making fun of people because they are different from you is the right thing to do?
- Why do you think Ronald changed his mind about Molly? How do you think our attitudes and feelings about ourselves affect how others feel about us? What can we learn from Molly?
