Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I hope everyone is well. We have had a successful first 8 days of school--enjoy the First Day of School Photo Album. Teachers and Staff have been doing a great job of building relationships and doing "Getting To Know You" activities with our students which is critical and also teaching the expectations and routines and procedures students need to know in order to be successful in school. Vice Principal Pati and I were also able to give short presentations to each class where we went over our PBIS expectations, Alebrije Pride, and the language and gestures we use as a school. I encourage parents to ask their children to show you the gesture for "Stop Bullying, I don't Like It"/ "Para Para, No me Gusta" and also the gesture for "Hands and Feet to yourself"/"Manos y pies a Simismo". Here is the Class Visits PBIS slide deck LINK we used to speak with students if you want to review and reinforce with your students. I also have challenged our students to reduce the number for garbage/landfill bags we generate at Snack and Lunch daily down from 4 to 2 a day which is attainable if we correctly sort food waste into the Green Compost bin, recycling plastic and paper into the Blue Bin.
We had a great turnout of about 60 parents at our first Principal's Cafecito last Friday and a nice visit from Superintendent Dr. Baker. Dr. Baker explained the planning process for the new School Bond Measure S improvements. He also spoke about the importance of selecting a new candidate for Area 3 to the RCSD School Board which will be discussed at this Wednesday's RCSD Board Meeting at 7:00pm. Vice Principal Patricia Alcocer led the Cafecito parents in a fun Ice Breaker/Community Builder where we got to know each other and we also spoke to each other about our Hopes and Dreams for our students when they graduate from Adelante Selby at the end of 5th grade. Check out the Principal's Cafecito Slide Deck Here and Photo Album Here
Last Friday in the late afternoon, we received some GREAT NEWS that Bay Area PARENT Magazine has selected Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School as a Gold Medal Recipient for Best Language Immersion School on the Peninsula!!! This is a great honor as it is voted on by parents and the community at large and validates our school's reputation and purpose! ¡Vamos Alebrijes! Check out the article in the "Best of Bay Area PARENT Family Favorites 2024" edition: HERE
We had a good number of parent and family volunteers this past Saturday who helped clean up and beautify our wonderful School Garden. Garden Teacher Susan Forker shared photos in this ALBUM and check out the new Rainbow Garden big photo below. Muchas Gracias to the students, parents, and families that helped beautify our school garden!!
We will be going over our expectations with parents for the school year at our annual Back to School Night this Thursday, August 29th from 6:00-7:30pm. For Back to School Night, the Parents/Guardians should report directly to the teacher's classrooms at 6:00PM(we prefer that you do not bring your children if at all possible). Pati and I will be doing a short Introduction/Welcoming that the teachers will show on the TV Monitors to parents in the classrooms. The teachers will then present their Back To School expectations where they will explain important aspects of what and how they will be teaching and how you can help your child succeed. A reminder to parents that Back to School Night is not a time for individual parent teacher conferences about specific needs for your child, but rather an overview of curricula, homework, rules and expectations for the year, and volunteer opportunities. If you have more specific questions about how to help your child, please email your teacher(s).
A big change district wide this year is that Parent Teacher Conferences will be earlier (October 1-4) which is about one month earlier than last year. The plan is for students to be more actively involved and reflective at the student led conferences. The expectation is that we help students construct knowledge about their individual strengths and how to use those skills to tackle areas of growth and challenges. We want to empower students to take ownership of their learning. We want to encourage students to collaborate and communicate with teachers and parents about their academic and social growth.
I am still looking for generous donations of scented hand sanitizer to spray kids hands before they get lunch in the cafeteria. The students particularly enjoy the "special" scented hand sanitizers, e.g., ruby grapefruit, lavender, lemon, orange, etc. Please drop off at the office labelled for "Director Warren" --Thanks!!

The Importance Of School Attendance
I want to bring parents attention to the importance of students attending school daily and on time. We know that regular attendance is crucial so that students can achieve to their maximum potential and especially in two languages. Our school has a goal to improve attendance and we want to decrease the number or percentage of students that are considered "chronically absent". Our district considers any student "chronically absent" if they have 9 or more absences(excused or unexcused) in a school year. So it is critical that parents and families plan family vacations around the school calendar and only keep their children home from school when they are sick. If students have doctor or dentist appointments, they still should attend school. Independent Study is for students that will be absent 5 or more consecutive days and the contract needs to be approved at least 2 weeks prior to the absences. Parents must come to the office to get the Independent Study Contract and it then needs to be approved beforehand so that teachers have time to put together all of the work students are expected to complete upon return to school. Thank you for your attention to this important matter and bringing your child(ren) to school every day and on time!
