Cougar News
Principal's Message 4.1.22
Happy April! Today is the kick-off for the PTA's Cougar Day jog-a-thon fundraiser. Please look for the flier with details in your child's backpack today and consider signing up as a volunteer to support our students in the field on April 29th.
Today also marks the beginning of Ramadan. This is a sacred month of the year for Muslims when there is an increased focus on charity and generosity. This is a good reminder for all of us to continue to be generous and kind to one another.
We want to wish anyone who celebrates a Happy Ramadan! If your child will be fasting during the school day, please let Ms. Post (postw@loswego.k12.or.us) know and we can work to make alternate arrangements for them during lunch and snack times.
Be well,
Principal Jennie Knapp
SEL Theme for April: Responsibility
“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”
~Mr. Fred Rogers
During the month of April, Lake Grove students will spend time exploring RESPONSIBILITY. As one of our three core values (safe, respectful, responsible), we teach and reinforce the skills and characteristics needed to show responsibility daily. This month we will deepen our understanding of responsibility through community discussions and classroom social-emotional lessons. Traditionally, responsibility is defined in a few ways: duty, accountability, and the independence to make decisions.
Here at Lake Grove, we will use the following definition: RESPONSIBILITY: to take action and understand how our choices affect others, ourselves, and the world.
To live responsibly, we consider our decision making and how it impacts ourselves and others. We take ownership of our choices with integrity and we practice the important skills of self-reflection and self-control. This month we will practice these skills and learn from people who show a lot of responsibility in their lives. By demonstrating responsibility in our activities and interactions, we can contribute to a more kind and generous world!

COUGAR RUN CLUB IS OFF AND RUNNING! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT NOON ON THURSDAYS
Every Thursday at noon, we need lap checkers. To volunteer, sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080A4DAFA82FA7F49-cougar. Volunteers must follow school procedures: sign a statement, provide proof of vaccination, and pass a background check.
This PTA-sponsored club helps motivate kids to get active, learn about running, create goals and track miles, and socialize with friends! Run Club takes place every Thursday during lunch recess. No sign up is required—kids can choose to run or not. Every runner who finishes their first lap gets a necklace and charm, and charms are earned every 5 miles after that. The PTA also recognizes top runners at the end of the year. Questions? Contact Heather Zadow, hlzadow@gmail.com.
ART LIT CONTINUES!
Thank you to the dozens of volunteers who have brought art literacy into our classrooms in March! Some Lake Grove classrooms will finish learning about JMW Turner in April while others will move on to study Grant Wood this month.
Art Literacy is a completely volunteer run program that introduces elementary students to art principles, elements, and techniques. All training, presentation materials, projects and supplies are provided by our PTA. To sign up to participate in an art lit lesson in your student’s classroom, visit: Lake Grove Art Literacy: Lake Grove Art Lit Presentations (signupgenius.com). This is a great opportunity to work with students in the classroom! Note that more volunteers are still needed in Ms. Parks’ fifth grade class on Wednesday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
Our first training session on Turner was offered earlier this month and a recording is available here: https://youtu.be/zcHJt72F3NU Our second training session on Wood was held on March 29. A recording of this session will be available next week. Questions? Contact Kim MacKay at kimtamura@gmail.com.

Safe Oregon
Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
