Principal's Update
Happy Friday, Lakers!
We made it through a very wet and windy week, and we hope you did as well!
We have had a few recent questions regarding our school policies on cell phones and smart watches, restaurant/fast food delivery, and student discipline records.
- Cell Phones: If you want your child to have a cell phone for before or after school purposes, they must have it powered off and in their backpack from 9:10-4:02. We also do not allow smart watches that have access to texting or internet. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that students' focus is on learning throughout the day.
- Outside Food Deliveries: We are not able to accommodate food deliveries during the day. If you have restaurant/fast food that you would like to send with your child in their lunchbox, that is completely fine. Thank you for your understanding.
- Discipline Records: If you have questions regarding your child’s disciplinary record, please contact me via email at jennifer.teal@wbsd.org.
Starting Monday, we will be participating in a donation drive led by the WBHS Animal and Wildlife Conservation Club. Donations will support the Oakland County Animal Shelter. Check out the information below for items you can send in.
Finally, for those of you with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, please see the important letter below as we get ready for M-Step testing. A big thank you to our Kdg, 1st, and 2nd grade students for making "Rock the Test" flyers to decorate our hallway and help get their older buddies pumped up to do well next week.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend,
Jen Teal

M Step Important Parent Message
Dear Parents and Guardians of 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders,
As we approach the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) testing window for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, we want to take a moment to explain the importance of these assessments and how you can support your child in preparing for them. Teachers will communicate the testing days for their specific class. More than anything, we would love your partnership in ensuring that your child is here and on time on all of their testing days.
Why M-STEP Matters:
The M-STEP is a standardized assessment designed to measure how well students are mastering the Michigan Academic Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. These standards outline the knowledge and skills necessary for success in college and careers. The M-STEP provides valuable information for several reasons:
- Student Progress: It offers a snapshot of your child's academic progress and identifies areas where they are excelling or may need additional support.
- School and District Accountability: The results help our school and district evaluate the effectiveness of our educational programs and make necessary adjustments to ensure all students are receiving a high-quality education.
- Statewide Comparison: M-STEP data allows for comparisons of student performance across the state, providing insights into the overall effectiveness of Michigan's education system.
- Informed Instruction: Teachers use M-STEP results to inform their instruction and tailor their lessons to meet the specific needs of their students.
How You Can Help Your Child Be Ready:
We understand that testing can be a source of stress for both students and parents. Here are some ways you can help your child prepare and feel confident:
- Maintain a Positive Attitude: Encourage your child to approach the test with a positive mindset. Remind them that it's an opportunity to demonstrate their learning and that we are proud of their efforts.
- Ensure Adequate Rest and Nutrition: Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats a healthy breakfast on testing days, whether at school or at home. A well-rested and nourished child will be better able to focus and perform their best.
- Practice Good Study Habits: Help your child develop effective study habits, such as reviewing class notes, completing practice problems, and managing their time effectively.
- Communicate with Teachers: Stay in communication with your child's teachers to understand their progress and any areas where they may need additional support.
- Reduce Test Anxiety: Help your child manage test anxiety by encouraging them to take deep breaths, visualize success, and focus on what they can control.
We are committed to supporting your child's academic success and believe that the M-STEP provides valuable information that helps us achieve that goal. Your partnership in this process is essential.
Thank you for your support.
Warmly,
Jen Teal, Principal
