Multiple Means of Engagement
Tech Tip Tuesday (November 5, 2024)

Let's make November accessible for all!
What is UDL?
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is the conceptual framework that is used to design technology devices, software, and learning materials to give all students equal opportunities to learn. UDL promotes creating technology tools that are flexible and can be personalized to meet the needs of each student.

What does it mean to have multiple means of engagement?
This is also known as the “Why” of learning. The goal is to appeal to the learner’s emotional or affective networks to increase motivation and to recruit interest. Optimize individual choice and autonomy, which increases relevance and value of the material.
Example: Include assignments with topics that feel relevant to students’ lives. Recognize diverse backgrounds and explore roles, statuses, contributions, and experiences of groups typically underrepresented in research studies.
Give me 3 examples, Brian.
1. Optimize Choice and Autonomy
Guideline 7: Options for Welcoming Interests & Identities
⭐️ Example: Create a choice board where students can select different formats for presenting their understanding (make a video on WeVideo , an infographic on Canva, written report using Google Docs), thereby fostering a sense of ownership and personal relevance in their learning.
➡️ Want to make a choice board quickly?
2. Foster Collaboration and Community
Guideline 8: Options for Sustaining Effort & Persistence
⭐️Example: Assign students to small groups to create a shared presentation on a topic. They can use tools like Google Slides, where they can contribute in real-time, encouraging interdependence and collective learning.

3. Cultivate Empathy and Reflection
Guideline 9: Options for Emotional Capacity
💭 Suggestion: Incorporate digital journals or blogs where students can express their thoughts and reflections on their learning experiences. Tools like Seesaw or Canva can help facilitate this process.
⭐️ Example: After a lesson, ask students to reflect on what they learned, what challenged them, and how they felt about the process. Encourage them to comment on each other's reflections to build a community of empathy and support.
