ConVal High School Happenings - December 11, 2020
Message From Principal McKillop
We had two great virtual class meetings earlier today. The 9th and 10th grade classes were able to virtually meet and hear from their respective class advisory boards. I was so impressed by the officers! Faculty class advisors were also able to give updates. It was nice to address the class, share a few words of encouragement, and have a few of my colleagues speak as well. I look forward to meeting virtually with the 11th and 12th grade classes next week.
Down below you will see information from our librarians on how to check out a book during this remote time. There are many new selections to chose from. I know our staff would be happy to help any student find a good match! As you will see below, the pickup process is easy as well.
We have one more full week of learning, followed by a 2 day week before we kick off our holiday break. As always, please reach out to the resources in our school if we can help in any way.
Best,
Heather

School Counseling Information
TAKE 10
We're continuing our bite-sized, drop-in opportunities for students to engage with counselors on certain topics during Intervention time. Here is this week's lineup :
Monday - 12/14, 8:30 am Program Spotlight: Spotlight on offerings from the Applied Technology Center! There is a lot to talk about, so it may be longer than 10 minutes, but a great chance to hear about many of the great career and technical training opportunities at ConVal!
Tuesday - 12/15, 10:00 am Mental Wellness: These sessions will be opportunities to connect with others to practice and develop strategies for mental wellbeing. Mindfulness, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques will be explored.
Thursday - 12/17, 2:00 pm College Planning: This week's focus will be on the College Essay. A great chance for seniors struggling with writer's block for current applications, or juniors to get a look ahead.
The link for the sessions remains meet.google.com/zzw-dwit-wpp and is also shared in Google Classroom and in a direct email to students.

Senior College Applications
If you are adding colleges, please make sure that you are checking in directly with your counselor to let them know. It is not enough to just add the college to your Naviance list, you need to communicate directly with your counselor to let them know (preferably through a conversation) that you’ve added a school and the deadline that you are aiming for. Thank you for helping us minimize your stress while we support you through the application process!
Signs of Suicide (SOS)/Not Alone
Health and Wellness and School Counseling are partnering when we return, following the remote segment in January, to deliver suicide prevention content in the Health and Wellness 1 and 2 classes. Parents will be receiving a direct communication from Tim Cotreau, Director of School Counseling, regarding these units. Our website has additional information regarding the suicide prevention programs we use, and can be found here: https://cvhs.convalsd.net/school-counseling/suicide-prevention-program/ Please use our counseling office as a resource if you have concerns regarding a student's mental health. If your or someone you know is having a mental health crisis, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is available (1-800-273-TALK) or contact 911.
