Sycamore Junior High Family Communication
September 22, 2023
Team,
Yes, you are part of our team! We couldn't do this without all the family support. We are incredibly grateful for all the patience and flexibility you've shown us this year as we get up and running. This week we had fun reaching new goals with Glow-a-Thon, racing paper cards in the hallway, and doing station scavenger hunts in math. Next week brings a 4 day Spirit Week. Get creative with your clothing and bring the school spirit. The theme for each day can be found below. Thursday will be our Glow-a-Thon. We are ready to dance and play, followed by no school on Friday, to allow for teacher professional development.
As we inch closer to the bus lot being finished we'll be sending out specific information for our new processes. Stay tuned for those next week, as well as information about how to sign up for a teacher conference. As a reminder we'd like to reserve those conference times if you have a true concern for your child that needs problem solving or information sharing. If you simply want to connect with a teacher to ensure your child is on the right track, we encourage you to consistently reach out to teachers via email or request a quick phone chat. We love connection and always look for ways we can partner with you.
As always, keep up the great work Aves!! We're so proud to support you.
-- Mrs. Schunk, Mr. Cole, Mr. Meyer

Communication/Grades/Canvas
As we are around the halfway point of the 1st quarter, we wanted to offer support in understanding your student’s progress in their classes and how to get help if needed. All of these tools are available through the Sycamore Schools Website.
Student Grades: Your student’s official, current grades are on Parent Portal. If you log in and choose your student, a course by course grade view is available. From that view, you can choose a course to see what assignments and assessments have been given and how your student performed. You can also set notifications around missing assignments or changes in grades through Parent Portal and an email will be sent to you!
Daily Activities: If you would like to see what the student does on a daily basis, you can login to Canvas. By clicking on each course you can view the daily assignments, announcements, and resources used by their teachers. If you still need support accessing Canvas, the weekly newsletter has a number of resources linked.
Getting Help: If you have questions or concerns about grades or progress, feel free to contact your student’s teacher at any time. Their email is linked on Parent Portal by clicking their name. There are conferences coming in October and November and this process will be communicated at a later date.
Thanks!

Remember : The funds earned support the PTO who helps fund all clubs, school sports, extracurriculars, programming & teacher gifting. This year the funds are even more impactful because they can help with additional items needed for the new school!
The kids can earn an awesome t-shirt designed by our incredibly talented parent Tommy Sheehan, chance to be entered into a weekly raffle for prizes, as well as top earner prizes! Think Oculus, $400 money card, FCC tickets!
MOST IMPORTANTLY this is our ONLY ask of the year & will fund the 2023-2024 school year!
Lost and Found
The lost & found is already full! If your student lost a sweatshirt, lunchbox, water bottle or shoes(!), please have them check the lost & found by the cafeteria. If they have lost anything valuable (AirPods, jewelry, etc) have them ask in the office. The Principals recommend students keep high-value personal items like Air Pods at home. We have had 7 students lose Air Pods in the last 3 days!

Child Nutrition Updates
Free and Reduced Lunch Application deadline 10/8
We want to ensure that your child continues to receive the benefits of the Free & Reduced Meal program in the upcoming school year. State guidelines allow these benefits to extend into the next school year to provide ample time for new applications to be processed. However, there's a critical date approaching: October 8th.
If your child qualified for the Free & Reduced Meal program in the last school year and you haven't submitted a new application for the 23-24 school year by October 8th, they will revert to a full pay status. Any charges incurred between October 11th and the time you complete a new application will be the responsibility of the parent or guardian.
To avoid any unexpected charges and ensure your child continues to receive these essential benefits, please submit your application as soon as possible.
