School Information
EDL Family Night: If you have a student participating in EDL join us this Wednesday, December 18th after school from 3:30-4:50 for EDL Family Night to check out all the fun things going on after school at Hidden River! There will be snacks, an opportunity to tour the various EDL classes at Hidden River, a dance performance, and lightening/shoot-around in the gym with the girls basketball team! Families and younger siblings are welcome, all students must have adult to attend.
Lost and Found: Is your student missing a winter jacket? Sweatshirt? Water Bottle? Gloves or a hat? Book? We have a number of items in our Lost and Found located near the front entrance. Encourage them to check it out. Unclaimed pieces of clothing will be donated over holiday break. (We do hold onto the coats).
Volunteer Opportunity: Are you looking for a new and exciting sewing project? Teacher Fischer would appreciate having two large cloth bags made which could be used to store and transport our tubas. Email Teacher Fischer at emma.fischer@spps.org if you are interested! Can't sew but still want to volunteer at Hidden River? YAY! Check out our volunteering website to see what we have going on and how we could use your help!
Out-of-School Time Youth Programs Update: As many of you know, there has been a significant shift in funding this past year resulting in a decrease of Flipside Afterschool program sites. This has left over 1500 middle schoolers with less options for afterschool programming. Saint Paul Public Schools, the City of Saint Paul and Saint Paul Children’s Collaborative are working together, to connect youth and families to additional opportunities in our community and to communicate the need for more resources for youth programming in Saint Paul. We have been working to connect our community organizations to use the SPPS digital flyers website, Peachjar. Each SPPS school website has a Peachjar link under the FAMILY menu. Here you will find electronic flyers for youth and family programs available across the city. We encourage you to visit your school’s website and sign up for a Peachjar account so you don’t miss out on any new programs or activities not just at your school but within the community as well. Classroom Updates
Ms. Kaufenberg - Health & Healthy Living
Two fun things happening in Health last week:
All 8th grade Health students were able to practice chest compressions on CPR dummies
B day Healthy Living and Health students had the opportunity to work with Dr. Steve Elmer, a Physical Therapy professor at St. Kates, to think through the problems associated with sustaining a human body in space long enough to make a trip to Mars. In the process, they built their own elbow.
Ms. Rolig - Art
Thank you!
Kristy Rolig,
Hidden River Art Teacher
Teacher Fischer - Winter Concert
Huge congratulations to all of the student who played in our first concert of the school year!! A big thank you to all of the families that showed up to support our students, and Central High School for hosting the concert.

Family Engagement - Keep Connected 360
As you might be aware, Hidden River has partnered with Search Institute and Change Inc. to offer the Keep Connected program to students and their families this year. Keep Connected offers resources to families, including tips, ideas, activities and learning opportunities to support strong family relationships.
One such opportunity is an upcoming workshop series, beginning in February, designed to strengthen your connection with your child, and develop relationships with other Hidden River families. The content of the workshop is based on the research of Search Institute and explores a developmental relationship framework to help kids thrive! Change Inc.'s school-based therapists will facilitate conversations and activities with both parents/caregivers and youth, supporting mutual learning and connection. We will provide a meal, childcare, and transportation! See the flyer for more information. We'd love to have you join us!
Family Talk Starters - This Week’s Focus: Be someone others in your family can trust. This is a great way to EXPRESS CARE through family relationships.
When you have a few minutes, ask other family members a question or two. Enjoy the conversation!
- Who can you count on to keep their promises? How does that affect your relationship with them?
- What was a time you did the right thing, even though it was hard? Looking back, how do you feel about your choice?
- What does it mean to be loyal to your friends or family? How important is loyalty to you? Are there times when being loyal is not the right thing to do?
