JERABEK TEACHER OF THE YEAR...MELISSA BASINGER
Congratulations to our first-grade teacher, Melissa Basinger, on being named Jerabek Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Basinger is a veteran teacher who creates a highly dynamic literacy environment. Her passion for literacy is transferred to her young readers and writers through fun and engaging lessons. She is a consummate professional and learner. As a teacher leader, she consistently shares her knowledge and new learning with her colleagues. In addition, Mrs. Basinger develops a strong rapport with her students and their families, creating a wonderfully positive classroom culture. She is loved by our Jerabek community! Great job Mrs. Basinger!
CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR...SHANA TOERIEN
Congratulations to our Classified Employee of the Year, Shana Toerien. As Jerabek’s Elementary School Assistant, Mrs. Toerien is invaluable in making things happen day in and day out. She truly sets the tone in creating a positive welcoming environment at Jerabek. While she manages all staffing and events at Jerabek, it is her ability to quickly problem solve that makes it look easy. She truly embraces our Leader in Me habit, “Think Win Win!” It is an honor to recognize Shana Toerien as Jerabek’s Classified Employee of the Year as she is a true asset to the Jerabek Community!
Physical Education Request
Our Physical Education teachers are experiencing more and more students wearing Crocs during Physical Education. Due to the high level of activity (MVPA- Moderate to Vigorous Pulmonary Activity) Crocs are presenting a safety concern! Please monitor and remind students to wear athletic shoes on their PE Prep days!
Thank you from our PE Coaches!!!

Leader in Me: Habit 4
Our next Leader in Me focus is Habit 4: Think Win Win. Our next awards assembly on January 25th will recognize students who think win win!
People who think win-win believe that there is plenty for everybody and that one person’s success in not achieved at the expense of others - win-lose.
Kid Language
Everyone Can Win: I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives.
Ways to practice Think Win-Win:
- Ask an older person what the golden rule is. After you know, try it out on someone.
- Try to go one whole day without sulking, pouting, or feeling sorry for yourself.
- The next time you want to argue or fight with someone about who should get the best toy, ask, “How can I make you happy too?”
- Make a “wish poster”. Start by drawing a line down the middle. On one side, cut and paste magazine pictures of things you want (like an ant farm). On the other side, cut and paste pictures of things your mom or dad want (like a clean room). Together, look at your “wish poster”. See how you can work with each other to make both your wishes and your parents’s wishes come true.
