High School Weekly Update
10/04/24
Principal Thoughts
Last Friday, the western part of our state experienced one of the worst natural disasters to affect North Carolina in my lifetime. The images from these communities have been absolutely horrific, and the loss of life has been truly staggering. While events like these are tragic, they also remind us of human decency. I have been truly blown away by our first responders and how so many people have made donations to help the people in Western North Carolina. Sadly, the people of these communities will be struggling to put their lives back together for weeks, months, and maybe even years to come. I am especially proud of our school community and the donation drive that has been spearheaded by our Community Service and FCA clubs who have partnered with the Gold Hill Fire Department. Their efforts truly model one of our core values, Service. Additionally, we will accept donations in lieu of a ticket for our Homecoming game tonight, and I have posted the acceptable items below. While it is impossible to ignore the sorrow created by Hurricane Helene, I am uplifted by the response of our staff, students, and parents, who have answered the call to help those impacted by the storm.
Gray Stone Recognized by College Board
Gray Stone has earned a place on the College Board's AP School Honor Roll for the 2023-24 school year! The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success. Research shows students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time. The students who enter four-year colleges with credit from AP accelerate their path to graduation and build confidence for college success. And even for those who don’t earn college credit, AP coursework provides early exposure to college-level work and contributes to a college-going school culture.
