October 2024 Vol #3
THIS YEAR'S BHIS THEME IS RECOGNIZING OUR SUPERPOWER!
Safety Starts with You
After School Enrichment Program!
After-school program registration forms were due Sept 27. If you submitted a form, Romelle will be sending out confirmation of your selections this week. If you have not submitted your payment, please make sure you do so online, or place your payments in the PTA mailbox located in the front office. As a reminder, pick-up this year will be at 3:45 pm. Please remember to sign your child out at every pickup.
Halloween?
Every year the question seems to come up: Can we wear costumes or not? While Halloween falls on a Thursday this year, we ask that kids refrain from wearing any costumes. Remind your kiddos that here at BHIS we hold a few Spirit Weeks where we can dress up and show our creativity.
Ultimate Frisbee
Ultimate Frisbee will start on October 1st – October 31st on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:20 – 3:40. Please come cheer on BHIS on Saturdays. Stay tuned for game schedules.
Bicycle Safety
Come Celebrate!
Please join us on October 17th from 2:25 - 4:25 for our Traffic Garden celebration (sponsored by Safe Routes to School Group). There will be free food, giveaways, and a bike rodeo! I don't think you will want to miss this event! See you there!

Visitors/Volunteers
Apply to Volunteer or Renew Volunteer Status
BHIS is always looking for volunteers to help out in our school. For the safety of our students, it is SPS policy that all volunteers complete a screening before volunteering in our, or any, school.
We are excited to host our annual Volunteer Sign-up on Oct. 24, an hour before curriculum night, at 4:00p in our school library. Don't miss this great opportunity to sign up to volunteer and get any questions you may have answered. You can also complete the course and sign up here too!
Morning Traffic Circle:
We need people to help put signs out, bring signs in, serve as crossing guards, and help direct traffic. Signs go out between 7 am and 7:15 am and we bring them back in at 7:55 am. Crossing guard duty would begin 7:25 am and end at 8:10 am. Even if you can help one day a week, that would be great! Please contact revalentine@seattleschools.org if this is something that you're interested in.
No Toys!
We are starting to notice an uptick in our students' bringing toys from home. We ask that you please remind students to leave their toys at home. Teachers will always inform parents of any events when students are asked to bring items from home. While we understand the excitement of a new toy, we don't want them to get lost. We appreciate your help in making sure toys stay at home. Please check their backpacks daily before school.
Lunch - Recess Volunteers
If you have time to volunteer and have completed your volunteer background check, we need volunteers to support lunch and recess. Lunch starts at 10:30 am and ends at 12:55 pm. If this is something you are interested in, please reach out to revalentine@seattleschools.org
Beacon Hill Annual Coat Drive!
From The P.T.A
The Read-A-Thon needs you!
The PTA is reaching out to see if you could help with this year's Read-A-Thon, which will take place Nov. 22, 2024.
The following roles needed:
Logistics - Print and deliver donation envelopes to global leadership team to distribute to teachers. Purchase and store snacks for distribution.
Communications - Work up all communications with teachers and parents to include translations in Spanish, Mandarin, Taishanese and Cantonese.
Volunteer Coordinator - Work with family members and local authors to schedule readers and other volunteers in the classroom for the day of the Read-A-Thon. Acquire volunteer readers and other readers ~5 weeks ahead to get through volunteer registration process.
Toby Clarkin is happy to answer any questions and describe the positions to volunteers.
Our hope is that we could get volunteers from the Latin@, Black and Chinese family groups this year!
To sign up to volunteer or for more information, please contact Toby Clarkin at tobeyclarkin@yahoo.com
