Hastings Middle School Family Flier
February 25, 2024
September 22, 2024
Hello Hastings Families,
We’ve just wrapped up our first-ever 6th grade camp at Nuhop, near Mohican State Park, and what an experience it was! It was amazing to see our kids enjoy the giant swing, tackle the climbing wall, and canoe on Pleasant Hill Lake. As always, our students did a great job representing Upper Arlington and Hastings Middle School.
It’s hard to believe we’re already seven weeks into the school year! As everyone is settling into their routines, I want to encourage our scholars to get involved in something outside of the classroom. Whether it's through athletics or clubs, there’s something for everyone. You can check out our athletic calendar and full list of clubs and activities here: Student Life at Hastings.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
Warmly,
Penny Stires
Principal

Hastings Calendar
Once again, we apologize for the last-minute reminder about this week’s early release. The Hastings Family Google calendar is a great resource for altered schedules, spirit weeks, conferences, etc. There is a link to the calendar at the top of the Family Flier each week.
Start With Hello Week!
During the week of September 23-September 27, Hastings will be acknowledging Start With Hello Week. For more information, please check out the “Counselor’s Corner” below. We have also added the theme of each day to the Family calendar. Monday is: “Make someone comfortable - wear your favorite pajamas or most comfortable outfit!”
Hastings Drama Club Tech Crew
The Hastings Drama Club Tech Crew will have its first meeting after school on Tuesday, September 24th from 3:30 - 4:15 in the Choir room. All interested students may attend. Questions? Contact Dr. Monseur.
Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for October 3rd from 4:00-7:30 p.m. Our focus will be on meeting with families whose students may need additional support or intervention at this time. We look forward to discussing ways we can collaborate to best support your child’s growth and success.
Family Teacher Conferences are a little different than what many are used to in elementary school. Spots at the middle level are limited due to conferences being 20 minutes in length and having limited time slots available per team, per evening.
Conference invitations were sent out to families via email on Friday. If you received an invitation, please make sure to select your preferred times using the Google Form within that email by Tuesday, September 24th. We will send out an email to all families on Wednesday, September 25th with any remaining times available. It will be first come, first served.
Please know that if you need to meet with a teacher or team, we will work to make that happen even if it is not possible during the scheduled Parent Teacher Conference night.
Make-up & Absentee Picture Day
Make-up & Absentee Picture Day is Thursday, October 3 for any student that was absent on the first day's photography event as well as anyone requesting a retake picture. If a student would like a retake of their photo, they simply bring back their original package and hand it to the photographer when they get their photo taken. HR Imaging will reprint the same package for them using that new image.
Sometimes a student may not have a physical package to return if they ordered a digital download or if parents have viewed the first image online and were unhappy with the photo. These students will be photographed if they present themselves for a picture.
Ski Club Information Meeting
Is your child interested in joining the Hastings Ski Club? If so, please attend the parent meeting on October 3rd at 7:30pm in the media center. If you are unable to attend, the information will be posted in the Family Flyer after the meeting. Hope to see you there!

Counselor's Corner
Start With Hello Week: September 23rd - 27th
During the week of September 23-September 27, Hastings will be acknowledging Start With Hello Week. Start With Hello Week aims to build connections and reduce isolation within school communities. Start With Hello Week was imagined by the Sandy Hook Promise organization.
Our Sources of Strength student team has been planning activities for each day to increase connection. This link Start With Hello Spirit Week 2024 highlights our daily themes and a few of the activities.
Turning Trash into Treasure
For a service learning project, we are looking for empty orange, green, and white circular containers that hold Tide or Gain laundry detergent pods. There will be a collection box by the counseling offices. It is very helpful if the container has the lid with it. Thank you for helping us to trash into treasure.
We are also always collecting the pull top tabs from cans. These are donated to the Ronald McDonald House charities. They recycle these tabs to help offset costs while providing care to families with children at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, please call or text 988 immediately. You can also chat with the Suicide & Cirisis Lifeline at 988lifeline.org. School counselors and our building mental health specialist are available to talk and provide additional resources as requested.

iPad Parent Control Information
The UACS Technology department provides 2 ways for caregivers to manage screen time, review web history, manage apps and internet access after school hours. The typical built-in Apple ScreenTime and Parental controls do not work because the district manages iPads for school use at a district level - the typical consumer level settings are not available. Caregivers can review web activity and disable internet access through the Lightspeed Relay Parent Portal. Additionally, caregivers can control app access and set rules through the JAMF Parent app. Questions may be directed to FamilyTechHelp@uaschools.org.
