What Memorial Day Means to Me
5th Graders in Ashley Roemer’s Language Arts classes had the opportunity to submit an essay, “What Memorial Day Means to Me,” sponsored by the Winsted American Legion. This year’s winner, Julia Anderson, received a $25 prize and the offer to read her essay at the Winsted Memorial Day Service.
Memorial Day
By Julia Anderson
“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived” -George S. Patton. Wow, that is pretty powerful! I know I don’t always think about it that way. Do you? Sometimes it’s not easy to think positively when someone dies. But we have to remember soldiers went into war willingly, knowing that they might die, but they did it anyway. And man, you have to respect that. When we think about heroes today, we think about Spider Man or Batman, but do we think about the people who died serving our country? I don’t know, I sure hope some do. That’s why we celebrate Memorial Day, to remember the people who died for us. I believe that they are the true heroes, and that we should spend less time mourning, but thanking God that people like that lived. We should remember them with respect and power, because they did something a lot of us couldn’t.
