Attention 8th Grade Students and Families...
We are excited to welcome the incoming freshmen to Normal West and Normal Community. Normal West and Normal Community will both be hosting Freshmen Orientation on Wednesday, December 4th starting at 6:30 pm. Families may not know which high school boundary they live within, so please click on this link to find which high school your student will attend (based on your address) High School Boundary Map.
There are a couple additional sessions prior to 6:30 that may be of interest to you. Please read these carefully:
- If your child wishes to participate in the Computer Science Associate Degree program offered by Heartland Community College and Unit 5, there will be a meeting at NORMAL WEST HIGH SCHOOL at 5:30 pm in the West Auditorium. This program is offered at West High School only; so if your child plans to participate in this program, they would attend Normal West High School.
- If you are interested in learning more about Honors Classes (Honors Classes: Are they for me?), Normal Community will offer an OPTIONAL session starting at 6:00 pm in the Auditorium. Both schools offer Honors courses.
- West Wildcat Welcome Letter- Freshmen Orientation 12/4/24
- NCHS Ironmen Welcome Letter - Freshmen Orientation 12/4/24

14th Annual Adopt-A Family: It's Better to Give than to Receive Celebration!
It's that time of year again! We are inviting all to participate in the 14th Annual Adopt-a-Family - It's Better to Give than to Receive celebration.
All Unit 5 schools were invited to nominate families in need this holiday season. Last year we adopted 150 Unit 5 families providing coats, hats, gloves, outfits, toys, gift cards, and many other household items and toiletries. This year the number in need tops even that.
If you are interested in helping, please go to a signup (below), click the item you would like to purchase, label the gift (example: Snowflake Child #1) and bring the gift wrapped and labeled.

Verkada Visitor Management System
We wanted to share that Unit 5 is expanding its use of the Verkada visitor management system to all district schools. This system, which has been used in Unit 5 high schools for the past year, is designed to enhance the safety and security of our students, staff, and visitors.
Upon entry into a school, visitors and volunteers will enter the main office and present their photo ID to be scanned by the Verkada system. The system tracks the arrival and departure of visitors, while also strengthening student safety by checking all visitors against a registered sex offender database.
The visitor's full name and date of birth is searched on sex offender registries. Additionally, the name is reviewed on our district banned person list. Within seconds, the system will share the results with school staff and will print an ID badge for entry.
If someone doesn’t have an ID, they will be checked in manually by office staff, sharing other forms of information.
It is important to note, this is only in use for times a visitor is entering the school during the day. It will not be used for after-school activities or when a parent is just coming to pick up a child.
We believe that the implementation of Verkada will greatly contribute to a safer and more secure environment for everyone in our school community. We are committed to providing a secure learning space and appreciate your support as we integrate this new system.
If you have any questions or concerns about Verkada, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.
