Family Update
Hardin Middle School
December 6, 2024
Hardin Families,
As you know, we have had a number of upgrades occurring throughout the building this semester - including a brand new kitchen in our cafeteria! The kitchen is set to be completed while we are on winter break which means we should be returning to an almost brand new cafeteria. Perhaps the biggest improvement for our students will be many more choices for lunch options and snacks. We will also have our microwaves back for student use to heat up lunches. It will be a very exciting time for our students!
Student success takes all of us!

Hardin School Improvement Corner
Improved Attendance, Improved Academics, Decreased Discipline
Discipline
Why do some students struggle with behavior? Some students struggle behaviorally because they are struggling academically. If a student is not on grade-level, has been absent for awhile, or is generally struggling to understand various topics - rather than feeling or looking inadequate in front of peers - acting out becomes a replacement behavior to distract from not understanding. As a staff, we prioritize identifying where students are struggling academically to best meet their needs so behaviors do not become a coping mechanism.
This Hardin School Improvement Corner will be a part of our weekly update where I address our three goals: Improved Attendance, Improved Academics, Decreased Discipline
After School Event - Friday, December 13!
Students must be in good standing by December 6th to attend and they will need their own rides homes.
Here's what students had to say about Ms. Keen:
I voted for Ms. Keen because she is always helpful and very kind. Ms. Keen is so helpful when it comes to work and grades and helping us understand everything so well.
Miss. Keen is always in a good mood for 1st hour and she always makes me laugh. She's my favorite teacher I have and I always look forward to coming to her class for ELA and AC lab
Ms. Keen overall is such a good ELA teacher. She always makes me happy as a student. She always finds ways to make ELA sort of fun.
She's very accepting and helps me through a lot of my work!
Orchestra and Band Concerts
Our orchestra and band programs wowed us once again this week with their holiday concerts. Below you will see Mrs. Veale and her 7th and 8th grade orchestra groups, and Mr. Collier and his 7th grade band, 8th grade band, and jazz band!
Great job to both orchestra and band students - it is clear they have worked hard this semester learning how to play!
Art Student Spotlight!
Our Art Club students are busy beatifying our walls with our Hardin mascot - the tiger! Additionally, we had several students participate in an art contest for optimist club - their designs were both creative and beautiful!

Alternate Methods of Instruction (AMI) Day Information
It's taken awhile, but colder temps are on the horizon. Should the district call for an AMI day, attached below is the student schedule and expectations. The way attendance is calculated on AMI days is through work completion so please make sure your student completes and turns in the assigned work on those days.
Taking Donations for "Serve St. Charles" Christmas Store
Our Peer Ambassador student leadership group is taking donations for Serve St. Charles. These donations will directly help St. Charles families during the holidays. You can donate wrapping supplies (wrapping paper, bows, tape, gift bags) or new toys and clothes for kids. This will be a competition between our teams at Hardin. Please consider donating!
Hardin Talent Show!
Hardin Middle School will be holding a Talent Show for our students and families. Students who are interested in performing in the Talent Show will need to turn in an application to Mrs. Stubits (room 119) by December 20th. Auditions will be held Tuesday, January 14th - Thursday, January 16th from 2:20 PM - 3:20 PM in the Commons. Students will choose which date works best for their audition and stay after school on that date. They must be picked up from school by 3:30 PM. Once students are accepted, they will receive more information about practice and a dress rehearsal. The evening performance for the Talent Show will be held on Thursday, March 20th at 6:00 PM for families. The school performance will be held on Friday, March 21st during the school day. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Stubits (sstubits@stcharlessd.org).
Lost and Found
We have a plethora of abandoned items in our lost and found. Everything in the lost and found will be donated over winter break, so if your student has lost an item please have them check before everything is donated. The lost and found is located in the commons.
Color Run - Extra Incentives
If your student raised enough money to earn the extra prizes for our Color Run fundraiser, we have booked the following dates for the prizes:
Nov. 20 - Lunch with a friend
Nov. 25 & 26 - Dodgeball (by grade)
Dec. 13 - Movie and Popcorn
Dec. 20 - Pass out gift cards and cash wheel
Attendance Policy and Field Trips/Events
ANNOUNCEMENT!
Starting next semester, any non-academic field trip or event will have a requirement of 90% attendance in order for a student to attend.
Varsity Tutors!
Did you know that the City of St. Charles School District offers FREE virtual tutoring through Varsity Tutors. Your student can find this app using Clever on their ChromeBooks, and they should be able to automatically log in based on their school Google credentials. Once logged in they can search for help in any class they are taking from a live tutor! This program has been fully vetted by our school district.
Backpack Program
We have a backpack program here at HMS. If your family would benefit from extra food items on the weekend, and you are not on our list already, please let your grade level counselor know.
Hardin Test Re-take Policies
For your information - Hardin test re-take policies can be found here on the Hardin website.
After School Activities!
Is your student interested in participating in after school activities here at Hardin? Please see the attachments for information regarding after school activities which start next week! Activities are held either Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays and last from 2:25pm - 3:20pm. We do not have bus service from activities so students either need a ride or permission to walk home. Being involved in after school activities is a great way to connect with Hardin, and an opportunity for students to discover new interests and meet new people!
Code of Conduct
Teachers covered the Code of Conduct with students this week. It is the student's responsibility to read and understand the Code of Conduct. I am linking the handbook here so you can also read through our student expectations.
