School Counselor Note
May 2025
Dear Families,
This is a good time to tune into what your child(ren) are doing on their technology devices. YouTube, BeReal., Snapchat, and conversation in online games are just a few of the things we hear students talking about in school. Here are some helpful Internet Safety Tips at Home (Resource: NetSmartz)
Tip 1: Keep the Ground Rules: Set boundaries that work for your family and schedule. Allow kids to be involved in setting these rules if it will help them stick to them.
Consider: School tasks need to be completed before social media or gaming; No devices during meals; At least ____ minutes of non-electric activities per day; ”Digital curfew”: no devices after a certain hour.
Tip 2: Modify How You Monitor: Even with the strictest content blockers, we can’t ensure that children are totally protected online. The best tools for keeping kids safe are time, attention, and active conversation about digital behaviors.
Consider: Have kids and teens use their devices in a space that provides you quick visual access to the screens for easy check-ins.
Tip 3: Engage with the Platforms: Get more familiar with the technology platforms your child likes to use. Taking an interest in the games and the social media platforms will help you better understand what your child is doing online.
Consider: Join your child on a round of a video game, or forward a funny meme or video you saw on one of the social media channels they use. It’s a quick way to show you’re willing and able to be involved in your child’s online life.
Tip 4: Chat: Chat “in real life” with your children. With so much of our social life being conducted online, it is important to have face-to-face conversations about how children and teens are maintaining healthy relationships online, and to give them opportunities to also talk about anything unhealthy or uncomfortable happening to them online.
Consider: Show them you are willing to listen and respond calmly, even if what you hear is uncomfortable or troubling.
Tip 5: Don’t Just Take the Tech: Only taking away the technology because a child has made a mistake online, rarely solves the problem.
Consider: Sometimes limiting access for digital socializing and gaming is a must, but revisiting tip 1-4 will help discourage poor choices in the future. Set your family ground rules, monitor their activity, engage with what they do online, and continue to talk about safety.
Thank you for working with your child(ren) to help them learn the importance of Internet Safety.

Wisconsin Shares Child Care Subsidy Program
Finding affordable, quality child care is a challenge that many Wisconsin families face. But it's not a challenge families have to face alone. The Wisconsin Shares child care subsidy program invests in eligible working families to help make quality child care more accessible and affordable. How? By covering a portion of their monthly child care costs. Why? Because when families get a little help — more is possible! Knowing their child is safe and well cared for, parents and caregivers can take advantage of opportunities that create strength, growth, and success.
Do you want more for your family? Take the first step and apply for Wisconsin Shares. Please find more information at Wisconsin.gov/wishares.
