SCHOOL UPDATE:
Dear Families,
Spring keeps rolling along, and we are already coming to the halfway point of May! We have had lots of rainy days, but with it comes beautiful flowers and trees blooming!
Last week was an exciting week here at Maple! We had an amazing sunny day last Thursday for Track and Field. A huge thank you to all Maple staff for help for working with students, as well as organizing and running such a fantastic event! The students were also great representatives of our Maple community at another school, which makes us so proud! Results will be shared back to Maple next week to help us with making our Maple Track team for the upcoming District Meet.
This past Friday, we had a kick-off assembly for our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser - look for details coming home with students - we are excited for the main event on May 23rd. We also revealed "Major" our new Mascot to students at the assembly and learn a new school cheer! Major brought gifts for the school to encourage activity and healthy movement at recess. Each pod received a collection of new basketballs, soccer balls, and colourful utility balls to use! Thank you Major!
A reminder that with the nice weather comes the potential for ticks! Please do regular tick checks on students. We have included a graphic in this newsletter as guidance for families.
The Maple Major basketball team has had another fantastic season! Thank you to all staff involved to get our students active. Next week will be a mini in-house tournament, with the winner getting the opportunity to play and lose to our super talented and athletic teachers!

STUDENT TRANSFERS AND FAMILY MOVES
We are coming closer to the end of our school year and are looking to plan for the 2024-25 school year. We kindly ask that families complete this form if you are moving your child to another school. This will provide information that will help ensure that your child's records are sent to the correct location. This does not replace a school registration - you will still need to register your child/children at their new school. Families will need to complete one form for each student. If you have any questions please include them in the comments section below, or contact the school at maple@limestone.on.ca
For Grade 6 Families: Please complete this form for your child indicating where they will be attending school for intermediate. If the school is an LDSB school (i.e. Vanier, LaSalle, Calvin Park). your child's records will be transferred and you do not need to register your child at the new school.

Social Stories for Children - Building and Scaffolding Skills
Social stories are powerful tools designed to provide guidance, support, and structure for individuals facing challenges in various settings (school, home, community).
What Are Social Stories? Social stories are short, personalised narratives that use descriptive text and visuals to explain social situations, behaviours, and concepts. Tailored to the needs and comprehension, these stories aim to enhance understanding, reduce anxiety, and promote positive behaviour.
How Do They Work? Social stories break down complex situations into smaller, manageable steps, making them easier to grasp. They outline appropriate behaviours, responses, and expectations in various scenarios, ranging from daily routines to social interactions. By offering a clear framework for understanding what to expect, these stories empower individuals to navigate situations with greater confidence.
Benefits for Learning:
- Enhanced Communication: Social stories help individuals grasp abstract concepts and social cues, improving their communication skills and interactions.
- Reduced Anxiety: By detailing what to anticipate in different situations, social stories help alleviate anxiety often experienced by those with these conditions.
- Improved Behaviour: Social stories provide a roadmap for appropriate behaviours, empowering individuals to respond positively to various situations.
- Building Independence: Individuals can learn to make informed decisions and act independently by understanding the world around them through social stories.
Utilising Social Stories:
- Home: Social stories can be integrated into daily routines at home, promoting smoother transitions and behaviours.
- School: In educational settings, these stories help individuals adapt to classroom routines and social interactions.
- Community: Social stories prepare individuals for outings, events, and public spaces, enhancing their comfort and participation.
Incorporating social stories into the lives of individuals can lead to increased understanding, improved behaviour, and greater overall well-being. By breaking down complex situations into relatable narratives, these tools provide a bridge to a more connected and confident life.

2023-24 School Achievement Plan - Ecole Maple
LDSB Concussion Protocol
LDSB has Concussion Protocol that must be followed by all staff (see Form 142-1 Flow Chart). The Flow Chart breaks down each step of the process based on if a student is conscious or unconscious/seizing/convulsing and a concussion is not suspected or suspected. There is an Administrative Procedure 142 Re: Concussions and Form 142-3 Sample Concussion Prevention Strategies as well for your review and reference.
If a student takes a blow to the head, face or neck, or a blow to the body that transmits a force to the head, we must suspect a concussion.
A Student With A Suspected Concussion
If your student does not pass Form 142-1 Tool to Identify a Suspected Concussion a concussion is suspected as signs or symptoms were observed and/or reported. This completed form is sent home with your student and filed in the Main Office. Your student may also have received first aid (i.e, ice, a bandage, gauze).
If a concussion is suspected, your student will receive a brightly coloured wrist band to alert all staff that they will be:
immediately removed from play
not allowed to return to play that day, EVEN if they noted they were feeling better (no gym, no recess, no community walks, no field trips, no team sports)
not to leave the premises without parent/guardian (or emergency contact) supervision (i.e., no bus, no walking home alone)
Your student will also receive Form 142-4 Documentation of Medical Examination which needs to be completed by a parent/guardian (signed and dated) and returned to school the next day. As per protocol, a copy goes to the teacher and a copy is placed in your student's Ontario Student Record. If your student does not return this Form, they will NOT be allowed to return to physical activity, and will receive a new bracelet until we receive the completed form.
Should your student be diagnosed with a concussion, please alert the school right away, and complete and return the below documents to the school:
Form 142C4 Documentation for a Diagnosed Concussion - Return to Learn/Return to Physical Activity Steps 2a-6 (this is a process and will take time to work through between school and home)
We take suspected concussions/diagnosed concussions very seriously and we appreciate your support in ensuring the safety of your student.
Please reach out with any questions.
