1, 2, 3, 4, We Declare A Penny War!
Students at Elderton Elementary learned the value of a penny during the annual Penny Wars competition. Staff and students collected pennies, bills, and other change in attempts to earn points and sabotage other classrooms. The money mayhem benefited the Armstrong County K-9 unit, featuring Blak, who is also part of the Armstrong County Sherriff's department.
Pennies and bills counted as positive points, while nickels, dimes, and quarters were stacked as negative points. Students deposited their money into jugs labeled for each grade level. The competition was stiff, as students lined up to fill the jugs. The winners would be victorious with bragging rights, a pizza party with the Sherriff's Department, and T-Shirts featuring Blak.
At the week's end, Elderton Elementary had collected $1577.81. Kindergarten was victorious, and celebrated their win with high fives and huge smiles. Blak visited Elderton Elementary and presented the school with a banner to display. It was a week that will not be forgotten.
Math 24
Four competitors sat around a table with a card displaying 6, 3, 6 and 4 on its front.
36 - 12 = 24
6 x 6 = 36
3 x 4 = 12
36 - 12 = 24
All around fourteen tables, numbers combining to make 24 were heard by teacher proctors. This meeting of the minds was the event at the Elderton High School Gym on April 9, 2024. Students in grades 4 - 8 from schools which the ARIN IU 28 represents came together to compete. 96 students came ready to show their mental math, quick processing, and higher order thinking skills.
In a world of calculators at our fingertips, mental math still is very useful and necessary in our daily lives. A game of Math 24 is a great way to practice these skills!
Representing Elderton Elementary were Emma Ohler and Hailey Dean from sixth grade, Anni Kimmel and Gavin Zimmerman from fifth grade, and Dylan Reefer from fourth grade.
Marching Into West Shamokin
The cadence of the drums could be heard throughout Elderton’s gymnasium as the West Shamokin marching band put on a show for Elderton Elementary’s fourth, fifth and sixth graders. The elementary students were treated to a portion of the color guard and marching band’s routine, and the hard work and precision of the high school students was evident. The West Shamokin students demonstrated what the marching band was all about to the elementary students. The elementary students learned about the expectations, schedule of events for the band, and the fun to be had by joining the marching band. Sixth graders received packets with information about how to join. They also learned that many of the marching band members also play sports and participate in the school musical, as well as other extracurricular events. Let’s Go Band!

Second Grade Doctors Reporting for Duty!
Miss Wiles' second grade finished up their CKLA unit on the human body with a bunch of fun, engaging, and hands-on culminating activities! They put their knowledge to the test by drawing and labeling major organs of the human body, explored microscopic objects, listened to a respiratory therapist explain her role in keeping our bodies healthy, read nonfiction books, and more.
We want to give a huge thank you to Nichole Geraci of ACMH for donating our doctor supplies, Kim Wiles for coming in to speak with our class, and our students who donated items to be used in these activities.
