Waterbury Roar

A Roar From Our Principal
Waterbury Community,
Happy December! I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall break!
December is always a busy month as there are performances and events throughout the month and only 3 weeks of school to get everything in before Winter Break.
A few reminders:
The weather is changing to winter. We saw some heavy snow already. Please make sure you child has all the necessary snow gear as we go outdoors for recess until the weather is under 10 degrees.
If you are dropping off or picking up, please make sure you follow the instructions of staff or the procedures of the school. We have a drop off and pick up lane, but this lane is for kids who are able to exit/enter the car independently. Otherwise please use the parking spaces, if your child needs help.
Please pull all the way up at arrival and dismissal in the drop off/pick up lane. We can only get so many cars into the lot, and we'd like to do it as safely and efficiently as possible.
If you use a parking space on the north side (in the U shaped lot), please turn on your hazard lights to assist us in identifying when you are ready to go into reverse and exit. The right of way goes to cars already moving through the parking lot. This again, helps us keep traffic moving. While you wait, turn up the heat and enjoy the warmth of your car as we try and get everyone else inside their vehicle.
Communicate with any relatives who are picking up the procedures and processes. This way they have an idea of what 150-200 vehicles navigating the parking lot looks like.
This month we begin our academic winter benchmark data collection. Collecting the data goes through January. These data points help us assess the progress your child is making, and we are excited to see their progress. We look forward to updating their goals and improving our plans of action!
Last, we have two big events. One is our Winter Door Decoration competition. Nothing helps chase the winter blues away better than student creativity! Also, we have our Winter Party. Please be on the lookout for any communication about this and how you can participate.
Thanks and have a great day,
Dr. Jon Pokora
Healthline: A Message From Our School Nurse
Please remember to keep your students home from school when they have symptoms of illness. IT is that time of year that we start to see an uptick in illnesses in schools that involve the respiratory system (cough, runny nose, sore throat and sneezing) and gastrointestinal system (stomach upset, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea). If your student has any of these symptoms or a fever, he or she should stay home until their symptoms have greatly improved, they can participate in school activities, and they have been fever-free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours.
We attempt to have outside recess every day when the weather allows. Please ensure your student has the proper clothing for cold and wet weather. This includes a hat, gloves, coat, snow pants, and winter boots.
As always, I am here to help so, please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns regarding your students' health.
Thank you,
Nurse Lisa

Hi Waterbury Families,
We blinked and it is already December! So many of our students at Waterbury have experienced many successes so far this year and we are looking forward to seeing what will be accomplished as the year continues!
As we head into several holiday breaks, we wanted to share an interactive resource for helping to ease the transition back to school. If you would like a hard copy of this resource, please reach out to Ms. Probst or Ms. Stanley and we will happily send one home with your student!

PBIS Focus
On October 10, students participated in the Trimester 1 celebration, an all-school carnival. Students had the opportunity to spend their hard earned paws on games, pumpkin painting, treats, and the chance to pie Dr. Pokora and Mrs. Fricano in the face!
At the end of October, students shopped at the Paw Prize Store. They were able to spend the paws they earned by demonstrating respectfulness, responsibility, and safe words and actions. We’re proud to see the Wildcat Way on display throughout the building.
