From Mrs. Barry
As we are planning for the upcoming year, we are looking at how our departmentalized grades will be structured. In third grade, we will have a team of 2 and a team of 3. In the team of 2, one teacher will be responsible for math and science and the other will have language arts and social studies. The three-way rotation will be divided as follows:
- Language Arts
- Math
- Science/Social Studies/Word Study
We will also see some big changes in 4th and 5th grade. In both grade levels, our students will see all 5 teachers every day in a five-way rotation, though this will look slightly different in each grade. We feel this has many benefits for our students, and we've seen it done with positive results on other campuses in SBISD.
In fourth grade, the breakdown of classes is as follows:
- 1 reading
- 1 writing
- 2 math
- 1 science/social studies
Each class will be approximately one hour long. The reading and writing teachers will still collaborate and integrate content, as appropriate. For math, the two teachers will work together to plan who will provide direct instruction and who will do small groups, stations, and more. This will change based on the units of study, areas of expertise, etc. This is designed to be fluid, offering more opportunities for differentiation and growth.
In fifth grade, the only difference is that social studies will be integrated into the reading and writing blocks, leaving science as a stand-alone subject.
We are excited about these new opportunities, but, as with any change, I'm sure you have questions and concerns. Please feel free to reach out to me! I'd love to discuss this more with you!
We are better together.

Exams for Acceleration - Deadline for Summer Testing = April 26th
Grade Level Acceleration
Exams for Acceleration (EA) offer students in grades 1-7 the opportunity to advance a grade level or more. Students who successfully complete all four course exams may advance one full grade level, while single subject acceleration is available for those who wish to advance in mathematics alone. Students testing during the fall window are eligible to accelerate immediately, while those following school year. To be considered for acceleration, it is recommended that a student be performing at the 70th percentile or higher on their most recent MAP assessments (grades 6-7), as well as the “Meets Grade Level” standard or higher on STAAR (grades 4 –7). Kindergarten students become eligible for testing in the summer prior to their first grade year. Test sequence for acceleration:
1) Grade Level Math
2) Grade Level Social Studies
3) Grade Level Science 4
4) Grade Level Language Arts
Applying for an Exam
Testing is free for all students enrolled in SBISD. Interested parents should contact their child’s school counselor for assistance with the application process prior to the due dates listed above. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Completing an Exam
Fall and spring exams are administered at the home campus; summer exam locations will be announced. Students are limited to one attempt per exam per window and two attempts per exam in total. Cancellations or no-shows may constitute one attempt. A score of 80% or higher is required for EA.
