News
Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
And just like that the first three weeks of school are behind us! It is so great to see so many things happening in our schools and in our community!
Since we are starting September, it is very important that we take the time to recognize that September is Suicide Prevention Month. All month long we will send out messages to share information about this important subject.
For this newsletter message, I want to reshare our posting from September 1:
Every September, the Nevada community gathers together to bring awareness to the important public health issue of suicide. This year, the International Association on Suicide Prevention has declared the theme for the 2024 September Suicide Prevention Month to be "Changing the Narrative on Suicide."
Talking about suicide wonβt put the idea in someone elseβs head, and it might help save a life. This September, #BeThe1To start the tough conversations.
Regards,
Derild Parsons

Message from our Partners at Care Solace π
Dear Parents and Guardians of the Churchill County School District School Community,
As we observe National Suicide Prevention Month and World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, we recognize the critical need to address the challenges of suicidal ideation among our youth. The impact of this issue extends throughout our community, affecting us all.
The first step toward intervention and support is awareness of suicidal warning signs, which include the following changes:
- Behavioral: Withdrawing from friends and activities, giving away personal belongings, self-destructive behaviors, increased substance use, sudden mood improvement after depression.
- Verbal: Expressing feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or being a burden. Talking about death, dying, or wanting to die, making statements like "I can't take it anymore" or "I wish I weren't here," mentioning specific plans or methods for suicide.
- Emotional: Drastic and sudden mood swings, overwhelming sadness, despair, emptiness, loss of interest in once-enjoyed activities, intense irritability or anger.
- Situational: Recent loss of a loved one, breakup, significant life changes, bullying or harassment, academic or work-related stress, financial difficulties, or other significant personal crises.
- Physical: Changes in sleep patterns (insomnia or excessive sleeping), changes in appetite or weight loss/gain, decreased personal hygiene and self-care.
- Social: Increasing social isolation and withdrawal from relationships, losing interest in social interactions or activities, feeling disconnected from friends, family, and self.
- Cognitive: Difficulty concentrating or making decisions, preoccupation with death, dying, or the afterlife, intense guilt or shame.
When you notice these warning signs, you should:
- Initiate a conversation about suicide.
- Provide active listening and non-judgmental support.
- Encourage professional help through therapists, counselors, and helplines.
- Involve trusted adults, such as parents/guardians, coaches, teachers, and mentors.
- Create a safety plan in collaboration with the individual.
If you or someone you know is experiencing hopelessness and suicidal thoughts, please seek help with these resources:
- 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: A nationwide lifeline network operating 24/7 to provide free and confidential crisis services. Visit 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
- NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness): Offers support groups and chapters throughout the United States. Visit NAMI
For those in need of professional support, consider contacting Care Solace, a complimentary and confidential service provided by Churchill County School District. They can help you find a mental health or substance use provider.
- Call 888-515-0595. Multilingual support is available 24/7/365.
- Visit www.caresolace.com/churchillcsd and either search on your own or click "Book Appointment" for assistance via video chat, email, or phone.
Unified β and with support and compassion β we can make a difference in our community's well-being. Let us stand together to raise awareness, provide assistance, and foster hope for a brighter future.
IMPORTANT Health Services Information
Respiratory Illness
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.

I am truly looking forward to this 24-25 school year!
School Highlights π
ππ Churchill County High School
Teacher Jeremy Sivers created a project using DonorsChoose, an organization that empowers public school teachers to request much-needed materials for their students. Siversβ project was to raise funds to Stamp Out Student Hunger and he asked donors to help him give his students the means to combat hunger so they can focus on learning. He raised $886 to be used to help him purchase food throughout the year to keep in his classroom for students in need.
ππ Churchill County Middle School
Students in Frank Whittenβs garden club learned about local produce and then sampled a variety of salsas.
ππ¦ Numa Elementary School
Fourth and fifth-grade students created Monochromatic Selfies in Jeremie Sorensen's art class using their tribe colors. As part of Numaβs plan to build school community and connection, every student and staff member at belongs to a school-wide tribe, either Red, Green, Yellow, or Blue.
