Mountain View Weekly Update
August 23
Announcements & Updates
- Reminder: All back-to-school forms, documents, and contact information updates must be completed via the Parent Portal by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 30. Please see the August 16 communication from Mrs. Toth for specific details.
- Bus information has been updated in Genesis. Please review your child's pick up and drop off times. It is recommended that students be at their assigned stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick up time. Please note that these times are approximate and can fluctuate due to traffic, weather and other factors. If you have questions or concerns related to your child's route, please contact the Business Office at 973-543-4804 or email transportation@mendhamboroschools.org.
- Mountain View Middle School has established a Chain of Command to clarify and simplify the process for contacting the school about a specific concern or matter. Please refer to the Chain of Command as a guide for determining who should be the primary contact based on the nature of the matter/concerns.
- Student Athletes in Grades 6/7/8: Please refer to Mrs. Austenberg's webpage for important information regarding new sports forms and changes in the submission process, beginning with the Fall season. Students participating in Fall sports must have all forms and physicals turned in by the first day of school. Please click here for more information. Dr. Porter will be clearing all sports physicals on Thursday, August 29.
- A reminder that electronic communication devices, including cell phones and smartwatches, must be off and stored in lockers during the school day.
- All students will attend a meeting with Administration during the first days of school, which will include a review of important policies and expectations.
- In the coming week, Mountain View Middle School will hold its first security drill. The New Jersey Department of Education requires schools to conduct one fire and one security drill per month. Be assured that policies and procedures will be reviewed with your child prior to the first drill.
- A reminder that all Chromebook issues must be reported via the Student Technology Help Desk. The fee to replace a lost Chromebook charger is $40.00. Students are encouraged to put their first and last name on their charger, if they have not done so already, so that it can be returned if found.

- Pomptonian would like to welcome you back to a new school year. See the attachment below for updates regarding school lunches.
White Cane Awareness
This year, Mountain View will welcome a new member of our school community who is blind. To ensure a supportive and inclusive environment, we must work together to raise awareness and foster understanding.
Recognizing and respecting the use of a white cane is critical. The white cane is an essential tool for individuals with visual impairments, helping them navigate their surroundings safely and independently.
Please be mindful of the following:
- Understand that the white cane is a symbol of independence. When you see a white cane, please allow ample space to maneuver safely.
- Ensure that walkways and common areas are clear of obstructions to help prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for all.
- It is the law in all 50 states to yield the right of way to white cane users.
Important Reminders re: Drop-off/Pick-up
To ensure the safety of our students and staff, please adhere to the following procedures for pick-up and drop-off:
- The staff lots are not to be used by parents for pick-up or drop-off. Please use the front circle, Dean Road curb line, and Orchard circle. If using the Dean Road curb, please be reminded that it is illegal to park within 25 feet of a crosswalk. The Bowers Road crossing must be adhered to and kept clear at all times.
- The cut-through between the small staff lot and front circle is not to be used for through traffic. This poses a danger to staff and students who are crossing.
- Per the green arrows on the diagram below, cars utilizing Orchard should pull all the way around the circle before dropping off. Please do not stop at the first sidewalk, as indicated by the red "X." This creates a traffic jam and leads parents to pass on the driver's side, which is a danger to students exiting vehicles.
- Also as noted below, the inner circle curb line (red circle) is not to be used for drop-off or pick-up.
- Morning supervision at each grade-level entrance door begins at 8:15 a.m. The bell rings at 8:25 a.m. for entrance into the building. On inclement weather days, students are permitted in the building at 8:15 a.m., where they will report to home base. For more information, including specific entry locations by grade, click here.
- Each year, administration receives regular reports of students not utilizing crosswalks and running across the street, particularly near Orchard and Park. Please remind your child to use crosswalks at all times.
