Our Spiritual Theme: We Walk by Faith
November & December Focus: We Walk by Faith... in Counsel
Spiritual Reflection by Miss Sheila O'Callaghan
That magical time is drawing closer. Sunday, December 15, is the third Sunday of Advent. It is
time to renew our commitment to Walk by Faith.
What did you promise to do for Advent? God promised to send the Messiah and He did. He was born in Bethlehem. We are now looking forward to His coming in glory.
Jesus is the light of the world. Just as the light of the moon and stars make it easier for us to move around at night, so Jesus makes our lives easier and helps us to live with peace, justice, joy, and love.
Beginning on December 17, through December 23, we have special prayers, called the “O Antiphons”. In these ancient prayers of the Church, we call Jesus by seven titles. The seven verses of the song “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” are based on these prayers.
December 17 - “O Wisdom”
December 18 - “Adonai” which means “Lord”
December 19 - “O Flower of Jesse’s stem”
December 20 - “O Key of David”
December 21 - “O Radiant Dawn”
December 22 - “O King of all nations”
December 23 - “O Emmanuel”, “O God with us”
On December 21, we celebrate and remember St. Peter Canisius, Priest and Doctor of the Church. December 21, is also the first day of winter, also called the winter solstice. It is the shortest day of the year. However, the good news is that from then until June 21, the days will get longer.
Lights are important symbols during Advent and Christmastime. Jesus is coming. Jesus is like the sun bringing us light and warmth.
Loving God, you bring light, joy and love to us. Let us carry your light and love in our hearts today and always.
Please pray for the sick, especially Fr. Mink, Mrs. Miriam Harris, Oliver Conaty, and all the sick of our parish. Please continue to pray for Maureen Engelbert. Pray also for our Armed Forces and First Responders.
Happy Advent!
The lighting of the Advent candle each week fosters a sense of anticipation and spiritual reflection. It's a visual and contemplative way of marking the passage of time during Advent. In this third week of Advent, we light the Joy Candle, also known as the Shepherd's Candle. The word Gaudete is Latin for "rejoice". The third Sunday of Advent celebrates the joy of Christ's coming to earth, and is a reminder that salvation is near.
As we draw near to you, Lord God, keep us aware of your presence in all we do. Come with power to enlighten us by your grace, that we may live in praise and joy all our days.
Amen.
