CAASPP Testing
Brookhaven CAASPP Letter 2025
There are many ways to measure your child’s learning and it is natural for every student to have academic strengths as well as areas where they may need more support and improvement. Your child’s teacher uses report card grades, classroom work, teacher observations, and end-of-year statewide test results to get a complete picture of your child’s learning. Each year, students across the state participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Your child will take the following tests, depending on their grade level or instructional program:
Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts and math, required tests in grades 3–8 and 11
California Science Test (CAST), a required test in grades 5 and 8 and 11
This year, students at Brookhaven will take the summative assessments during the following testing window: May 5-30, 2025. The testing schedule will be provided by your child’s teacher.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking tests, you can:
Explain to your child that these tests are tools to help them learn, and they should not be anxious or scared.
Explore the practice tests with your child at caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.
Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their best and are there to help, every step of the way.
You will receive your child’s results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will identify where your child is doing well or needs more help, so you can better support their learning at home and teachers can better support their learning in the classroom.
To learn more about these tests go to the Starting Smarter web page at ca.startingsmarter.org/, or review the Parent Guides to Understanding at cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District and Brookhaven Elementary are home to outstanding students, teachers, and programs and together we encourage full participation in CAASPP testing to ensure our students and schools earn the recognition they deserve.

ALL parents and students are welcome to attend the annual PYLUSD student art show called Artworks.
The Artworks event is free of charge for all PYLUSD community members and is running from April 1st- April 28th, 2025 from 10am to 5pm. We have SPECIAL opening and closing nights scheduled from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on March 31st, 2025 and April 28th, 2025.
This year we are excited to collaborate with the nationally recognized Nixon Library who is hosting our Artworks event. Although admission is free to see the artwork, if parents and students want to visit the Nixon gardens, the Presidential helicopter, or Nixon historical rooms, they must pay Nixon admission prices. We are extremely grateful to have our student art displayed at this venue and would like to publicly thank the Nixon Library for their generosity.
When you are walking the Nixon halls, there are some special areas of the art show we would like to point out. At the start of the Nixon main hallway, our 2025 Artworks Endangered Species and Nature Conservation Poster Contest winners and finalists are displayed. Five winners took home a $50 Blick Art gift card and had their work displayed throughout the district on posters notifying the community about the show.
Approximately 400+ TK-12th grade PYLUSD students have art in the Artworks show. These pieces were selected by our PYLUSD art teachers. There are no winners in this show (except for the PYLUSD Artworks Poster Contest and PTA Reflections Contest). Artworks is a showcase of the work produced by our PYLUSD students.
In the foyer by the Nixon gift shop 2D artwork is displayed created by students age Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 12th grade. Artwork labeled Elementary is TK - 6th grade, Intermediate is 6th- 8th grade, and Secondary is 9th-12th grade. Right outside the theater the 2025 PYLUSD Reflections Contest 1st place winners are on display. In the Presidential Cabinet room display cases showcase our 3D artwork from our middle and high school students.
Inside the Nixon Theater a short video is being looped presenting more PYLUSD student artwork along with promo videos showcasing our community art partners including the Nixon Library, the Parent Teacher Association (Reflections Contest), Yorba Linda Woman’s Club, Yorba Linda Arts Alliance (Artsology event), the Placentia Chamber of Commerce (Art Grants), the Placentia Women’s Rotary Club, and the 2025 PYLUSD Artworks Contest.
We hope you are able to attend Artworks. If you have any further questions about the district art show, please contact Audra Ross at aross@pylusd.org. Thank you!
