Our Mission is that every school should have a debate team and every student should have access to the best debate education opportunities. We support practices every day, tournaments every weekend, workshops every month, and summer debate camps from the first day of summer to the last day of summer. Year round we provide one of the most nationally award winning after school academic programs according to the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Institute for Museum and Library Services, the Presidential Committee on the Arts and Humanities, and the White House Youth Awards Program. Today, we work with over 100 schools and 1000 students each year. We are the largest middle school debate league in the nation, second largest high school debate league in the nation and first elementary school debate league in the nation. The benefits of participating in competitive debate are well documented. John Sexton (1994), president of New York University and former dean of NYU Law School explains: “In some ways debate is superior training to what’s offered in some law schools.” According to Yale University Professor Minh A. Luong (2000): “There is no better activity that will develop essential academic, professional, and life skills than dedicated involvement in speech and debate.” Debate has also been shown to have particular advantages in closing the achievement gap for students in urban school districts. Debate improves academic performance (debaters earn higher grades than their peers, have higher attendance rates, and are more likely to test as college ready in English, Reading, Math and Science). Each semester that a student debates, his/her grades will improve. Debate improves literacy. Debate improves graduation rates (95%+ of debaters graduate on time). Debate improves the graduation rates of those with the highest risk of dropping out (72% of this population graduates). Debate prepares students for college (90%+ of debaters attend college).
