The Buzz
Spring Term - 7th March2024
Message from the Head of School
We started this week with our Lifting Limits assembly. The message ultimately is if you dream big and work hard enough you can achieve. We talked about unhelpful thoughts e.g. I’m not good at maths or a parent sharing an unhelpful comment e.g. I wasn’t any good at maths either. Disempowering thoughts and beliefs are dangerous and we want to avoid them at all costs.
We shared this video with our children as we know gender stereotypes can be embedded by 7 years of age.

Despite our work on lifting these limits our youngest children are sharing their beliefs that girls have to wear cardigans and not jumpers and it’s only boys that are allowed to play football. Please can we work together to dispel these myths and ensure our children believe that with the right attitude and work ethic they can reach the stars.
Next week is National Science week and the theme is ‘time’. In preparation for this we had a visit from the Science Dome. Children from Reception to Y2 got to explore the dome and take part in an interactive session. Thank you to Miss Keith, our Science lead for organising. This was funded by HISNA. Thank you to everyone that supports our fundraising events.
We are celebrating World Book Day tomorrow (Friday 8th). I wonder if you can guess which book the staff have taken their inspiration for dressing up from? Last year it was ‘101 Dalmations’.
Our Summer 2024 Club timetable was released last Thursday evening. To view/book a place for your child you must contact the club providers directly. Please see the link at the end of this newsletter under 'Useful Links'
Chapter book donations
Thank you so much for all the generous donations of good quality picture books for the lending library. We are fully stocked with books aimed at 3 - 5 years olds but are in need of chapter books suitable for Year 2 pupils. If you have any that you are willing to donate we would be very grateful if you could drop them off in the office for the attention of Mrs Davies.
Have a lovely weekend.

Author Visit
On Thursday 29th February HISN were lucky enough to have a visit from the author and illustrator Paul Garaghty. All the children and adults fully enjoyed his wacky and imaginative approach to his workshops, and all children were captivated by his enthusiasm. Ella said, “It was so good because when he said ‘Fizzbit!’ the screen would move!”
Paul started off his workshop by talking in different languages and saying lots of exotic words, while getting the children to repeat back to him or give opinions. Jai said “My favourite bit was when Paul said ‘booooooks’ in a funny cow voice because it made me laugh.”.
Paul introduced all the different books that he had published and spoke about his inspiration. Paul lived in South Africa and said that he was based near the bush, meaning he had all of his inspirations from animals that he saw. Paul told stories about his different encounters, Noah said, “I liked it when he told the story of the bugs coming into his house because he used noises to make the story better.”.
Paul then went on to show the process of him creating a story and the process of him designing the illustrations. He explained to the children how it takes him up to 2 years to make a book. He explained that he starts off by making small comic books to explain the story layout before he creates giant paintings of the illustrations which are then printed into his stories.
We were so impressed with how fascinating Paul was and we are so thankful for him coming in. Thank you to HISNA for funding this amazing author.

Explorer Dome
We have been so lucky to welcome the Explorer Dome to school this week. The dome is an interactive Science workshop which allows children to explore their curiosity and investigate in a fun and practical way.
Reception classes were entertained by a ‘Light show’, whilst Year One participated in a workshop relating to ‘The Body’. Year Two were presented with an ‘Environmental’ experience. The children were excited to enter the dark dome and experience the workshops.
Thank you so much to HISNA for supporting this amazing workshop. What a great introduction to British Science Week, which is taking place next week. The children will be involved in many exciting activities and experiments. Look out for some pictures in next weeks Buzz!
Team Earth
Team Earth have started gardening this week. The children experienced planting a variety of different seeds including sunflowers, wildflowers and carrots. We look forward to planting more as the weather improves. Thank you for all of the wonderful seed donations.
Makaton Sign of the Week
🟨 Nursery
This week it has been all about books and celebrating the magic of storytelling. Our focus text this week is 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and we have immersed ourselves in caterpillar and butterfly crafts, reading the story, completing jigsaws and flying like butterflies in the garden. We have been learning about the life cycle of a caterpillar too.
In PE we have continued to learn some more yoga moves and practised being still and relaxed.
In our maths this week we have been focusing on learning our numbers 5 - 10.
We ended the week dressing up as our favourite book characters! What a fun week.
Time to talk - Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
We have been celebrating 'World book day this week'. At home please talk about what your favourite book is to read and who was the author or this book and who was the illustrator? Share a photo of you sharing your favourite story together on tapestry.
🟥 Reception
This week we have celebrated World Book Day. The children have enjoyed looking through books, talking about their favourite stories and their favourite places to read. RP and RF had their visit to the library this week, they had such a lovely time and were complemented by the library staff on their excellent behaviour. Our focus text this week has been 'The Hungry Caterpillar.' We have been talking about the lifecycle of a butterfly and enjoyed acting out the different stages.
Phonics - We have continued to recap all of the sounds that we have learnt so far. We have learnt the new sounds 'sh' 'ch' and 'th' and have been building words using these sounds. We have learnt that these have 2 letters but make one sound. Our handwriting letters are p, h and n.
Maths - This week in maths we have been looking at one more and one less than a given number.

🟦 Year 1
Year 1 have been delving into the world of rhyming words in English this week. We have been using the book ‘Oi Frog!’ by Kes Gray as our inspiration, and have had great fun identifying the rhyming words in the story before thinking of new rhyming words that we could use to match the various creatures. We are looking forward to using these to create our own lines for the story next week.
We have spent some time in maths over the last two weeks exploring addition and subtraction, so this week we have been looking at how they relate to each other. We have been using ten frames and bar models to help us identify the fact families for numbers within 20, as well as looking at how we can use the ‘=’ symbol at the beginning AND at the end of number sentences. We learnt that we can add two numbers together in any order, but subtraction cannot; we must always subtract from the largest number.
In PE, we have been working on our stability and control when performing balances. We worked on being as still as a statue and holding our balance for 5 seconds, squeezing our muscles to help us. We also explored hitting using a racket, holding the racket at the bottom of the handle and hitting the ball in the centre of the racket face.
We have continued with our focus on flowering plants in science this week. We have been exploring the various types of flowers and plants we may find in gardens, and discussed which we would like to plant in our own gardens. We thought about which plants and flowers would attract birds, bees and other insects and the benefits of this, and whether we would want to plant edible plants for ourselves to eat. We then designed our own gardens based on our decisions.
We have continued to travel the world in geography this week, swimming through the various oceans and identifying where these are located within the world. We have also been learning another song to help us to remember these and label them correctly on our map.
This week in computing, we have been exploring how objects can be described in many different ways. We identified the properties of objects and we used these to group objects; for example, objects can be grouped by colour or size. We then practised finding objects with similar properties and discussed the reasons we might need to give labels to images on a computer.
🟩 Year 2
Thank you for helping us with our sewing project this week, the children loved using their designs to independently sew their puppets. They were all thrilled to use a needle and thread to sew their felt. They cannot wait to finish decorating their puppets in our next DT lesson to bring their dragons to life!
In Year 2 this term we have introduced the children to google classroom. This has meant that all children in year 2 have now received an individual log in and password. The children have been amazing at learning how to navigate logging in and using google classroom to access their work. In computing this week, we have been learning how to create digital pictograms to represent and interpret data. We began by collecting data on our favourite fruit. We created a class tally chart and then used this data to build a digital pictogram.
In English we have been busy re-telling the story of Ignis. We will now focus on Ignis' sister 'Flamma' as we use our imaginations to write a new story where Flamma cannot fly. We can't wait to share our ideas with you.
We had a wonderful visit from the Science Dome this week too where we learnt about our world and the importance of taking care of our environment. We explored the world virtually, looking at rainforests, deserts and ice environments. We discussed which plants grow and live in each environment and how animals adapt to live successfully in each one too. A very exciting afternoon for year 2 and we cannot wait for Science Week next week.
