BCHS Jag PRIDE Newsletter
August 2024
Yes, We're Back!
BCHS Families,
The start to the 24-25 school year was incredible, and the year is in full swing with learning happening, clubs meeting, athletics competing, and incredible Jaguar PRIDE filling the newly painted BC halls. We have had such an incredible August getting to know our newest Jaguars, getting to meet our families at our Meet the Teacher Night, and also having events to get our Jaguars involved. There are so many opportunities to be involved on campus, to build strong connections with fellow students and staff, and also to work to improve and support the community that surrounds us. It is truly great to be a Jaguar!
We are always excited to send our newsletters that capture the opportunities, celebrations, and incredible PRIDE that happens at BCHS each and every day. We are also so grateful to our amazing community for the support that truly makes BC an A+ School of Excellence! Go Jags!
With PRIDE,
Mrs. Brittany Sutton

Jaguar Life!
Two BCHS Teachers are Finalists for AEF's Arizona Teacher of the Year!
And our Collaborative Team Spotlight!
We are incredibly proud to announce that both Mr. Burnton (AP World History) and Mr. Donovan (AP US History & Social Studies Department Coordinator) have become top 5 finalists for the Arizona Teacher of the Year! This is the first time in AEF history that two teachers from the same campus have made it into the top 10 semi-final round, and now Mr. Donovan and Mr. Burnton are making history once again as 2 of the top 5 finalists! There are many exciting moments to come because of this incredible recognition, which include capturing a video of interviews and teaching for the awards gala, recognition by the DVUSD Governing Board on September 10th, and the AEF Teacher of the Year Gala on October 19th where the Arizona State Teacher of the Year will be named. Both Mr. Burnton and Mr. Donovan are considered Ambassadors of Excellence at this point in the competition which will afford them some incredible opportunities as teachers in the state. Congratulations!
And to share another amazing part of this story-- Mr. Burnton and Mr. Donovan don't just teach in the Social Studies Department together-- they are a part of the same collaborative team that meets on Fridays during district PLC time. Their collaboration around student learning and growth in the AP Social Studies vertical team has grown both of their practices over the years. The collaborative time has allowed for time to deeply unpack standards, skills, and AP course curriculum as well as time to share strong instructional practices to support student growth and learning. Since Mr. Burnton and Mr. Donovan have been collaborating, they have strengthened one another's practices while also increasing student success in AP World and AP US History. During the 2024 AP Exams, BCHS had the most students test in AP World and AP US since 2018 with the highest score averages in the last 5 years! Teacher collaboration has been a definitive part of the success of our Arizona Teacher of the Year finalists!

Welcoming the Class of 2028!
Freshman Cat Camp
On Thursday, July 25th, we welcomed our freshmen students to Boulder Creek High School for the freshmen Cat Camp. Led by our student government students, our newest Jaguars learned the layout of our campus and the location of their classrooms, participated in Q&A sessions about all things BC, and got to know each other during games and at the pizza lunch.
The day was a big success, with over 300 students participating, leaving them feeling more confident, connected, and ready to start the year in their new role as Jaguars! Thank you to everyone who participated, and a special shoutout to our student government for their organization and for leading the event!
We are excited to see our new students grow and thrive at BCHS and are committed to supporting them throughout the next four years of high school. Go Jags!
Jaguar PRIDE Freshman Assembly
We are excited to share the success of our Freshman Jaguar PRIDE Assembly, held on the first Friday of the school year. This event was about welcoming our newest Jaguars and introducing them to the values of Boulder Creek PRIDE: Prepared, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Everyone United.
The choir kicked things off with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem while the band and cheer team greeted students with energy and led everyone in the school fight song, filling the BCHS gym with school spirit! Also, BCHS English teacher Mr. Morales gave an inspiring speech, motivating students to kick off the new school year with energy and a positive mindset. Thank you to our Student Government and JALAC students, who did a fantastic job presenting these values to our freshmen, showing them what PRIDE looks like on our campus daily.
Prepared: Being well-prepared for school each day, emphasizing the value of active participation, completing assignments on time, and striving for excellence in all endeavors.
Respect: Treat everyone with kindness, empathy, and respect. It also highlighted the value of recognizing the varied backgrounds, opinions, and perspectives that enrich our school community.
Integrity: Instilling a strong sense of integrity is important for building a culture of trust and responsibility within our students. We encourage students to take pride in themselves, their learning, and our school.
Discipline: Discipline is the foundation upon which success is built. Our assembly focused on the self-discipline required to manage time effectively, make positive choices, and persist in facing challenges.
Everyone United: Our students were encouraged to view themselves as integral parts of a larger whole, with a sense of belonging and community spirit that extends beyond the classroom. When we are all united and work together as a positive and caring community, it creates a safe campus that sets the stage for all students to be successful in academics and extracurricular activities.
From the classroom to the common areas, from lunchtime to restroom etiquette, the principles of PRIDE guide our students to exhibit exemplary behavior and set a positive example for others. By embracing what it means to be a Boulder Creek Jaguar, our students will excel academically and grow into responsible, empathetic, and resilient individuals.
Jaguar PRIDE is about building a culture of cooperation, collaboration, and commitment to learning, and this assembly was the perfect start to introducing these values to our new Jaguars!
Fresh, Spirited Look with New Paint!
After years of purple, green, blue, and tan, BCHS's interior celebrates Jaguar PRIDE through a fresh new color palette! Academic halls are now brighter and capture pops of BC Black and Red with some Gray and Jaguar gold. The fresh, spirited paint is an exciting change that brightens up the campus! We are grateful to our voters who approved the last bond which afforded a large scale interior painting project such as this! It absolutely has transformed and brightened the campus for our learners!

BCHS's Mrs. Sutton Named DVUSD Principal of the Year!
We are excited to announce that Boulder Creek High School's Brittany Sutton has been named DVUSD Principal of the Year! Mrs. Sutton is in her eighth year as principal. Under her leadership, our school has achieved remarkable successes, including being A-rated and earning the prestigious A+ School of Excellence Award in 2024!
Other highlights of her time at BCHS include implementing the BCHS Professional Learning Community, where staff collaborate and focus on student learning and support aligned to the standards; implementing Flex Time intervention periods to support students with targeted skill-based support as well as providing flexible academic learning time for all of our Jaguars; and seeing the incredible successes of our students over the years as they compete in athletics, show their artistic passion on stage and on canvas, earn scholarships for their future in the millions of dollars, and give back to the community through compassionate service, as well as numerous recognitions for our dedicated teachers and staff.
Principal Sutton’s commitment to improving student outcomes and empowering our teachers and staff has built a culture of excellence and Jaguar PRIDE, where ALL students are supported and encouraged to reach their highest potential.
Congratulations, Principal Sutton, on this well-deserved honor! We look forward to continuing this journey of excellence with you!
Club Rush Day at BC
Club Rush Day was a success! On August 14th, students had the opportunity to check out the variety of amazing clubs Boulder Creek offers. Student representatives shared information during both lunches and answered questions, helping their fellow Jaguars discover new interests and opportunities. Getting involved is an excellent way for students to meet new people and make the most of their time at BC.
If students are interested in starting a club, present your idea to a BCHS teacher or staff member and ask if they would sponsor it. When you have a club sponsor, please see Myana Tunnell in the front office for a club packet with information about how to start a BC club.
Visit the BCHS Website for a current list of BC clubs.

Hello BCHS Families,
Every Thursday, we send out an E.Q. Insight to our students based on the week's motto. Below is the student insight for this week:
Happy Thursday,
Our first motto of the year is always:
Your day depends on you.
This motto may seem like an unwanted responsibility, but when we apply this motto to our lives, things tend to get easier rather than more difficult. You can apply this motto to your everyday experiences by:
1. Being Aware of Your Expectations
If you expect your day to be horrible, you will tend to agree with yourself. You will likely look for evidence of why your day isn't going well instead of ways to improve it. Negative expectations will make your experiences worse, and you deserve better.
2. Asking yourself: "How can I help?" versus "What's in it for me?"
When people show up with a focus on helping, they are more likely to interact with people, get involved, and make the most of their experience. When people wonder how a situation will benefit them, they tend to judge people rather than engage with them, and they are less likely to participate or get involved. When people focus on "what's in it for me?" they do not put energy into creating good experiences.
3. Adapting, Rather than Expecting
Adapt and make the most of each moment. There will always be good and bad experiences, but you have the power to make them better or worse. If you are walking into your least favorite class, why spend all day dreading it? Spend your time making the most of what you can from the experience.
"Do what you can, with what you've got, where you are."
-Squire Bill Widener
Your day depends on you; be good to yourself.

Remembering "Doc" Schwarz
BCHS hosted a memorial for Dr. Robert Schwarz (lovingly known as "Doc"), BCHS theatre teacher who passed away in June 2024 on August 3rd in the Performing Arts Center. The morning was a beautiful tribute to an incredible person, teacher, father, and veteran that gave so much to the community around him throughout his life. Students and alumni also gathered at Anthem Park in June to have a memorial and created a beautiful piece of art in tribute to Doc that will hang for students to see in the light and sound booth. We greatly miss Dr. Schwarz, his kindness, and his warm spirit, and we are grateful for the beautiful community that has come together to celebrate his life.

Jaguar Learning!
Learning is in Full Swing from Day One! Jags are Learning & Growing Each Day!
Classrooms are a Distraction-Free Zone!
To help eliminate distractions during class time, BCHS expects students to keep cell phones in their backpacks in either off or silent mode. Students will have access to their Chromebooks for learning and must come with them charged each day. Please keep any other items that may distract students in the learning environment at home.
BCHS Attendance Tip of the Month
If your student is marked absent for one class period during the school day, the fastest way to get support is to email the teacher of that class period. The teacher will be able to verify the absence or submit an attendance change to the office if it is needed. This will help speed up the process and get you the support your need!
Transition School to Work (TSW) Program Information
The Transition from School to Work (TSW) Program is a unique opportunity for high school students with an IEP or 504 Plan within the Deer Valley Unified School District. In partnership with Arizona Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), which is a state agency that provides supports for individuals who have a disability, to obtain and maintain successful employment, students are provided enhanced transition services that focus on pre-employment skills and post-secondary employment and/or education planning. Students will participate in instructional units that foster awareness of possible career pathways, job readiness skills, and work-based learning opportunities on and off campus such as informational interviews, job shadows, college tours and career fairs.
Due to this program being funded through Rehabilitation Services Administration funds, students/families must participate in an intake process with the campus Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in order to determine eligibility for services. Once eligibility has been determined, students will work closely with TSW staff. Students will enroll in the Career Inquiry elective class during their sophomore or junior year and the Career Development elective class during their senior year. Students will receive services in partnership with TSW staff and the VR Counselor during the 9th grade year as well, depending on when they are found eligible for services. During the 4th quarter of your student's senior year, they will work closely with the VR Counselor to determine and finalize their plan for after high school. At that time, a Senior Exit Meeting will be conducted and families/students will be provided a comprehensive binder with resources to support their transition.
**Please note that if your student also receives services through the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), they are still able to participate in this program if determined eligible.
TSW is a program for all abilities and levels and provides support to students' pathway after high school, whether it be direct job placement or post-secondary education. So please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have about our program. We look forward to speaking with you!

Show that Jaguar P.R.I.D.E!
BC Jaguar PRIDE means that our Jaguars are Prepared, Respectful, have Integrity, are Disciplined, and show that Everyone is united! To ensure a safe, focused, and positive learning environment, we PRIDE expectations with students on Thursday in second period.
- This includes our expectation that students keep their cellphones on silent mode in their backpack so students can properly engage in learning.
- Students should be prepared with a fully charged iPad each day and any other items required for class to help with their success.
- It is also critical that students are in class and on time to be present for learning which is critical for their success.
- We also expect our students to be respectful of classrooms, school and personal property each and every day.
Please review our BCHS PRIDE expectations in our Student/Parent Handbook . Taking time to show Jaguar PRIDE is important as we work toward our mission of providing “a safe learning environment with rigorous academic opportunities for all students to graduate as productive, responsible, and contributing citizens!”
