Girls Win Red Map; Boys Finish 4th at State Indoor
Another Red Map is coming to the HTHS trophy case! The Hewitt-Trussville Girls Indoor Track & Field team finished 2nd at the 7A State Meet Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex. The HT Girls finished 15 points ahead of Vestavia to claim 2nd place honors. The HT Boys finished 4th out of 32 teams in the event.
Husky Highlights:
*Tori Mack won the State Championship in the 60m Hurdles. Haven White placed 6th in the race
*Avery Cahoon finished 6th in the Girls 400m
*Avery Cahoon finished 3rd in the Girls 800m
*Avery Cahoon finished 8th in the Girls 1600m
*Hadley Turner finished 6th in the Girls 3200m
*Catherine Asbury finished 6th in the Girls High Jump
*Jayda Hammonds finished 2nd in the Girls Long Jump
*Haven White finished 3rd in the Girls Pole Vault
*Madisyn Hawkins finished 3rd and Jaliyah Edwards finished 7th in the Girls Shot Put
*Girls 4x200 Relay finished 5th
*Girls 4x800 Relay finished 4th
*Michael Igbonoghene won the State Championship in the Boys Long Jump
*Michael Igbonoghene finished 3rd in the Boys Triple Jump
*Raphael Boakye-Yiadom finished 8th in the Boys 60m Hurdles
*Elliott Greene finished 8th in the Boys 800m
*Jamal Hobbs finished 5th in the Boys High Jump
*Shaw Helfrich finished 3rd and Alex Jones finished 4th in the Boys Pole Vault
*Boys 4x200 Relay finished 5th
*Boys 4x800 Relay finished 7th

Bowling: State Tournament Recap
Hewitt-Trussville Bowling traveled to Mobile last week to compete in the AHSAA State Tournament.
Girls:
The HT Girls rolled games of 682, 682, and 733 on Thursday to qualify 7th in the eight-team field. DJ Stovall was 10th overall in the individual standings after games of 176, 176, and 168. The Huskies entered bracket play as the #7 seed and were matched up with #2 Thompson in the state quarterfinals. HT jumped to a 2-0 lead with wins by the scores of 222-191 and 167-152. Thompson made the score 2-1 with a 231-158 win. The Huskies got closer to securing he victory when they went up 3-1 with a 154-137 win. After Thompson closed the gap to 3-2, the Huskies clinched the victory with a 190-180 win. Senior Anna Abney was clutch again as she secured the win.
The Huskies would fall to Sparkman 4-0 in the state semifinals.
The HT Girls finished the season with a 20-6 overall record. The top-4 finish was the best for the Girls' team since 1977.
Boys:
The HT Boys finished qualifying as the #1 seed after games of 969, 959, and 884. Nate Dodson was 5th overall in the individual standings after games of 211, 220, and 158. Carter Pannell was 7th overall after games of 180, 199, and 204. The top-seeded Huskies met #8 Stanhope-Elmore in the state quarterfinals. HT was down 2-1, but rallied to take a 3-2 lead. After Stanhope tied the match 3-3, the Huskies won the final game 200-197 to clinch the win. In the state semifinals, HT fell to Thompson 4-0. The state semifinal appearance tied the best finish in school history for the Boys' program.
The HT Boys finished the season with a 19-6 overall record.

Girls Basketball Area Tournament Information
The Hewitt-Trussville Girls Basketball team finished the regular season with a 23-5 overall record. The Huskies were 6-0 in Area play and earned the right to host the 7A Area 6 Tournament.

The Hewitt-Trussville Boys Basketball team finished the regular season with a 18-10 overall record. The Huskies were 3-3 in Area play and earned the #2 seed for the Area Tournament. Spain Park is the host site for this year's Boys Tournament.

Wrestling Set to Begin Postseason Competition
HT Wrestling finished the regular season with a 62-12 win over Mortimer Jordan last week. The Huskies are now preparing for postseason competition.
This weekend, the team will travel to the Birmingham Crossplex for the North Super Section. Athletes that finish within the top six in each weight class will advance to the State Tournament. This year's State Tournament will be held in Huntsville February 15-17.
Andie Freedman Named Varsity Head Volleyball Coach
Andie Freedman has been hired by Trussville City Schools to serve as a HTHS teacher and Varsity Head Volleyball coach.
Freedman has served as the Varsity Head Volleyball coach at Homewood High School since 2020. The Patriots reached the Final Four in 2021 and advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2020, 2022, and 2023. Freedman's team won the Area Championship in 2022 and 2023 and were the Area Runner-Up in 2020 and 2021.
Coach Freedman coached players to post season awards including All-OTM team, AVCA First Team All-State, AVCA All-State Honorable Mention, AHSAA North-South All-Star selection, All-Super Regional Team and several players have continued their volleyball careers at the collegiate level. Freedman also has experience hosting large, elite tournaments, as she co-directed the Blalock Tournament during her tenure at Homewood.
From 2015-2019, Freedman served as an assistant coach at Hoover High School. The Bucs were the state runner-up in 2016. Hoover advanced to the Final 4 in 2018 and 2019 and advanced to the Elite 8 in 2015 and 2017.
Outside of the school setting, Freedman has worked with the Birmingham Volleyball Club since 2015. She is also a member of USAV and AAU organizations and holds SafeSport, Impact, and Double-Goal Coach Certifications.
Coach Freedman stated, "I'm excited to join the Hewitt-Trussville family and for this amazing opportunity to teach and lead the volleyball program. Trussville is a special community with an enthusiasm for athletics and a tradition of excellence. I'm really looking forward to working with Mr. Walker, Mr. King, and the rest of the community to positively impact the lives of our student- athletes and to continue to raise the standard of volleyball in Trussville. Go Huskies!"
Hewitt-Trussville High School Principal Aaron King stated, "We at Hewitt-Trussville High School are proud to welcome Coach Freedman! Her coaching talent and experience on the court is complimented by her teaching talent and experience in the classroom. The future of Husky volleyball is bright!
Trussville City Schools Athletics Director Lance Walker added, "I am excited to welcome Coach Freedman to Trussville. We are excited about the future of our volleyball program under her leadership. Coach Freedman has championship level experience as a head coach and assistant coach in the Birmingham area. We look forward to supporting her and our team as we prepare for the 2024 season."
Freedman went to Vestavia Hills High School and graduated in 2004. She played volleyball for the University of South Carolina and was an All-SEC Honor Roll selection during the 2004-2005 school year. She later transferred to UAB and graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Economics, Policy, and Consumer Behavior. She added a Master's degree in Secondary Education from UAB.
Tennis Picks Up First Win of the Season
HT Tennis traveled to Sylacauga on Friday and both Husky teams picked up victories. The HT Boys and HT Girls are now 1-1 overall on the season.
The Huskies will be in action again on February 13 when they travel to Springville.

Girls Soccer Opens 2024 Season
Hewitt-Trussville Girls Soccer ushered in their new turf surface on Thursday night. The Huskies scored first to take a 1-0 lead over Bob Jones. The Patriots equalized late in the game to secure a 1-1 tie.
This week, the Huskies will travel south to meet Auburn on February 6.

Boys Soccer Set to Open Season Tuesday Night
The Hewitt-Trussville Boys Soccer team will open the 2024 season by hosting Vestavia on Tuesday night at 7pm. The 9th Grade and JV teams will also be in action prior to the Varsity match.
The Huskies will travel to Montgomery this weekend as they play three matches in the Capital City Cup.

MS Wrestling Finishes 2nd at Metro
The Hewitt-Trussville Middle School Wrestling team finished 2nd at the Metro Championships.
