This Week: Perspective
This coming week's character strength is "Perspective." Within this strength our goal is to know that people see things in different ways and may have a different point of view from you.

This Week is Safety Week
This week is Safety Week across Huron Valley Schools and the State of Michigan! Teachers will talk to their students, in an age appropriate manner about how to stay safe in a variety of situations:
- fire
- severe weather
- a medical emergency
- a health emergency (like the pandemic)
- building maintenance problem
- shelter in place
- dangerous person
Highland Staff Participated in Run, Hide, Fight Training with the OCSO Last Week
All HVS employees participate in this training that is held at each school in the district.
Shelter in Place vs Lockdown
A shelter in place is very different from a lockdown and it is important for parents and guardians to understand the difference of how they may be used at Highland Elementary.
A shelter in place is used any time we need to keep the hallways clear or to keep students inside of the building. Regular learning continues in classrooms during this time. A shelter in place can be called or a variety of reasons including but not limited to: a medical situation that requires privacy or the presence of emergency medical personnel, a student in crisis who needs privacy or is exhibiting a behavior we want to shield other students from, a water leak in the hallways, or a dog loose on the playground. Typically, they are done very quickly and students begin moving freely about the school in a short time.
A lockdown is an emergency situation that requires lights off, blinds pulled, doors potentially barricaded, and moving locations within the room as to not be near the door or windows. Parents and guardians will ALWAYS be notified in the event of a lockdown or a lockdown drill.
While we hold safety drills in accordance with standard requirements by the county, and teach and practice the basics, we know that our students are young and some ideas might be complex for them. Students are always given the primary direction of: Always listen to your teacher or the adult who you are with. They will guide you and tell you what to do. This is reinforced over and over at school; you can help support in any conversations you may have with them at home by saying the same - Listen to the grownups....they will always tell you what to do.

HALLOWEEN
There are changes this year, so please take note:
On the morning of Thursday, October 31st, Highland Elementary will celebrate Halloween with a costume parade. The morning will begin as usual, with students entering the building and heading to their classrooms. We ask that costumes be worn to school, preferably over your child’s clothing. After the parade, time determined by your child’s classroom teacher, the children will remove their costumes and place them in their backpack or a bag labeled with their name.
Parade Details:
Weather permitting, at approximately 9:45 a.m. students and staff will begin the outdoor parade. Families are invited to join us. Please park in the back parking lot and walk to the front of the building. Staff will be there to assist families as they line the bus loop (No CRC needed). In the case of inclement weather, we will hold the parade indoors but due to space and maintaining a safe and secure environment, it will be for students and staff only.
Classroom Celebrations:
Individual classrooms may have celebrations at different times of the day. Your child’s teacher will communicate specific details about their plans. If you have been pre-selected to be a volunteer in the classroom, you will sign-in in the main office. All volunteers must have a current year’s CRC on file.
Costume Information:
Please note the following protocols regarding Halloween costumes for students and adults during this day of fun:
1. Gory and/or scary costumes and masks will not be allowed. Children must wear child friendly costumes.
2. Please refrain from using makeup and/or face paint.
3. Absolutely no weapons or replicas of weapons are allowed as part of costumes. The HVS Student Code of Conduct will apply.
4. Lastly, we understand and respect that not everyone feels comfortable with costumes and/or participating so feel free to choose the level of participation that meets your child’s needs.
Snacks and Allergy Alert:
All snacks must be individually wrapped and store bought (not homemade). Your child’s teacher will communicate if snack donations are needed. Lastly, please consider this a friendly reminder to be mindful of items purchased for student consumption. We do have students with peanut/tree nut allergies and diabetes. Thank you for taking this into consideration.
As a reminder to all of our guests and visitors, HVS properties, including school parking lots and vehicles in our parking lots are alcohol, drug, smoking, and weapon free school zones.
We are looking forward to a fun and exciting day. If you have any classroom specific questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
Student Phones and Smart Watches
Just a reminder that if students bring a cell phone to school it must be powered off and in their backpack in their locker all day. Smart watches may be worn if messaging and calling is disabled during school hours.
Monster Mash is this week!
Our Monster Mash Glow Dance is Friday, October 25th from 6-8pm! Join us for some dancing and fun! This is a free family event. Children must have an adult present with them at all times. See the attached flyer for more information.
Volunteers are needed! We need lots of help to make it a great event! Shifts are set for 30 minutes so everyone can still enjoy lots of time with their families. Thank you in advance for your time!! Monster Mash SignUp Genius
