November 2024
Happy November!!!
Can you believe it's already November? Time really flies! As we enter November, we are reminded of the season of gratitude and reflection. This month, we’re celebrating the resilience, growth, and connection that each family brings to our community. We’re grateful to be part of your journey and honored to support each child and family through every step of progress and success.
November is full of exciting activities and learning opportunities. Let’s embrace this season of gratitude as we continue to work, learn, and grow side by side.
Remember to collaborate with your BCBA to increase session frequency for more effective progress, especially during school days off, such as vacations, half days, or professional development days!
First and most important..... We are so Thankful for our families
As we make our way through November, we want to take a moment to reflect on what we’re most grateful for—our families. This season is a reminder of the incredible support and resilience within our community, and we couldn’t be more thankful for each of you.
Families are the backbone of everything we do, and we appreciate the dedication, love, and patience you bring to each day. Your involvement and trust inspire us to provide the best care and support for every child, making a world of difference in our mission.
This month, we celebrate you! Whether you’re navigating new challenges or reaching exciting milestones, we are here to support you every step of the way. Thank you for being a vital part of our TeachUs ABA family. Your support makes our work possible, and we’re truly grateful for each of you.
Big Family Dinner and Autism
Big family dinners during the holiday season can be both joyful and challenging, especially when supporting someone with autism. Here are some strategies to help make gatherings more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone involved:
1. Prepare Ahead of Time
- Social Story: Share what to expect at the dinner in a way that is clear and comforting. Describe who will be there, where it will be held, and how long it might last.
- Practice Greetings: Some families find it helpful to practice introductions or simple greetings with family members. This can ease any anxiety about social interactions.
2. Choose a Comfortable Setting
- Create a “Quiet Space”: If possible, set up a quiet area where your child can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. Let them know this space is available if they need a break.
- Bring Comfort Items: Whether it's noise-canceling headphones, a favorite toy, or a familiar blanket, bring along comforting items that can help your child self-regulate if things become too stimulating.
3. Set Realistic Expectations
- Flexible Mealtime: Eating with a large group can be challenging, so consider offering some familiar foods your child enjoys or a plate they can eat from comfortably.
- Pace Yourself: Shorten your stay if needed, and keep an eye on how your child is feeling. Sometimes just knowing that leaving early is an option can make everyone feel more at ease.
4. Involve Family Members
- Educate Family About Autism: Give family members insight into your child's needs. A quick conversation can go a long way in creating a more supportive atmosphere.
- Assign a Buddy: If your child feels comfortable with certain family members, they may enjoy having a "buddy" to check in with or play alongside.
5. Encourage Down Time
- Take Breaks: Schedule a few breaks throughout the gathering, where your child can step away from the crowd, even if just for a short walk or some quiet time.
- Slowly Reintroduce: After a break, reintroduce your child to the event. Sometimes, a few minutes away from the noise and excitement can help them recharge.
6. Plan for After the Event
- Celebrate Small Wins: Congratulate your child on attending the gathering, and talk about any parts they enjoyed. Celebrating these moments reinforces positive experiences.
- Decompress: Give them space to relax after the event, as social situations can be tiring. Plan some quiet time or a preferred activity to help them unwind.
With a little preparation and support, holiday dinners can be more manageable and enjoyable for everyone. Remember, flexibility and patience are key, and it’s okay to adjust plans to meet your family’s needs.
