CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
It's been another fantastic week at Canyon View Elementary School! On Monday, our Band and Orchestra delighted us with their parent performance. On Tuesday, kindergarten dazzled us with their choral music performance, on Wednesday, our Westview Ambassadors came to present a Character Counts Assembly and helped us roll out our new slogan for remembering our Coyote Rules... Canyon View C.A.R.E.S. Ask your students if they know our four simple rules, and if they can remember what the letters in "C.A.R.E.S." stand for! Also on Wednesday, our No Place for Hate Club kicked off with their first meeting and began planning activities to support Canyon View's culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. On Friday, student council held a field day on the lower field. Also, this week holiday class holiday parties filled the halls and there was joy and merriment at every turn!
To our CVES families - we wish you a wonderful winter break with your Coyotes! We look forward to seeing everyone back at school in 2025!
Let's Make it a GREAT NEW YEAR!

CATCHING UP WITH... Picture Books for Our Families
Specially Curated Books from Ms. Alice Burge, CVES Library & Media Tech
Even though we reside in sunny San Diego, we can appreciate the changing of the seasons in our own way. The winter months bring us cooler nights and shorter days, and we can vicariously enjoy the pleasures of frozen, snowy weather in books and media, all without the inconvenience of shoveling driveways and scraping windshields! Here are some seasonal picture book selections to get you and your family into a wintry frame of mind:
The Thing About Yetis written and illustrated by Vin Vogel
Everyone knows yetis love winter! They love snowball fights and hot chocolate and sledding and building snow castles. But even yetis get the shivers, and even yetis get crabby from all the cold. So here’s a secret about yetis: they truly appreciate winter but sometimes they miss summer. Sometimes, they have to bring a little bit of summer to the coldest of winter days. Those yetis, they're just full of surprises!
The Shortest Day: Celebrating the Winter Solstice written by Wendy Pfeffer, illustrated by Jesse Reisch
The beginning of winter is marked by the solstice, the shortest day of the year. Long ago, people grew afraid when each day had fewer hours of sunshine than the day before. Over time, they realized that one day each year the sun started moving toward them again, which was a cause for rejoicing. As a result, many contemporary holiday traditions were borrowed from ancient solstice celebrations. In lyrical prose and cozy illustrations, this book explains what the winter solstice is and how it has been observed by various cultures throughout history.
A Hat for Mrs. Goldman: A Story About Knitting and Love written by Michelle Edwards and illustrated by G. Brian Karas
Mrs. Goldman always knits hats for everyone in the neighborhood, and Sophia, who thinks knitting is too hard, helps by making the pom-poms. But now winter is here, and Mrs. Goldman herself doesn't have a hat–she's too busy making hats for everyone else! It's up to Sophia to buckle down and knit a hat for Mrs. Goldman. But try as Sophia might, the hat turns out lumpy, the stitches aren't even, and there are holes where there shouldn't be holes. Sophia is devastated until she gets an idea that will make Mrs. Goldman's hat the most wonderful of all. Readers both young and old will relate to Sophia's frustrations, as well as her delight in making something special for someone she loves.
CATCHING UP WITH... Parking Lot Safety Reminders
IMPORTANT NOTICE: THE GREEN CONE ZONE IS FOR SPECIAL DAY CLASS FAMILIES ONLY
Additional Parking Lot Reminders
- Attention TK/K Families: You are not required to park and walk students to the gate for drop-off. Use our drive-through drop-off instead. We have supervision from the curb to the blacktop from 8:20 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Please continue to park and pick-up from the gate at dismissal.
- Attention Grade 1-5 Families: Do not park in the lot for drop-off or pick-up. Instead, use the supervised drive-through pick-up curb west of the office. This allows sufficient parking for our staff, and TK/Kindergarten families.
- Curbside Drop-off/Pick-Up: Use our designated drop-off/pick-up area to the west of the office only. Do not ask your child to meet you anywhere else in the lot. While this might seem faster for you, it slows down our system for everyone and creates a safety hazard.
